Severe Tropical Cyclone about to hit Queensland

TC Marcia is predicted to become a Category 5 Cyclone by the time it makes landfall on the Queensland Coast Friday morning (local time). Category 5 is the most powerful system that we measure. Cyclone Yasi was a Category 5 when it made landfall in 2011.

I did a quick check on JW.org and there about 12 Congregations in that area.

At the same time, there is another category 4 system about to make landfall in the Northern Territory. It's a bit difficult to tell how many congregations are in that area, as it's not greatly populated. Most of it would be part of Kakadu which would be part of our Aboriginal territory. Our Brothers and Sisters there may not have access to strong cyclone shelters.

Please keep these Brothers and Sisters in your prayers, and may Jehovah keep them safe and in good spirits.

If anyone on this forum is from either area, or has contacts there, please update us as soon as convenient.

I'm OK as I'm about 2 hours inland from Brisbane. If it makes it here it will likely only be a Category 1.

At the moment it looks like it will be as powerful as Yasi. I have friends (not Witnesses) who are right in the path of where it's making landfall but I haven't heard from them yet. They don't have good mobile reception where they are.

I'm heading off to work but I'll post if I hear anything.

Take a wee look at this ... this is what I use to track wind/cyclones coming towards us as well.

You'll see TWO tropical cyclones there ... one is called Lam and the other Marcia.

Mandi, without going to a map, isn't NZ and Aussie close enough to each other for NZ to be affected?

I love your link.

Not with these ones IF they stay in the North of Aussie. Most likely the one that could affect us - is the one they are worried about - but the usual scenario is that they lose a lot of puff once they hit land and die down to a tropical storm - hopefully without too much damage - so hard to predict. There is the rare occasion though they bounce back out to sea where they gather strength and if it goes south likely to hit the top of NZ but I can't see that happening with this one.

We've the odd one getting trapped between aussie and NZ - and that's done some damage but most come from above NZ from the north east. At the moment more concerned for the brothers and sisters in Aussie than here.

Actually looking at the forward projections in that link of mine ... it looks like it hits land, loses strength, then bounces back and strengthens, no data to tell what happens from there

On that link click 'earth' and you will see some arrows - that's the projection path - which may or may not happen.

Ya I saw the arrows and was trying to get a handle where everything is so went to Google Earth. The storms have to cross New Guinea too. Looks like it can race right over it. Pshew, scary. Got some info from here

Look forward to hearing how things went. It's 3:25PM Thursday where I am so it makes it 4:25am Friday where you folks are. Storm must have crossed over now.

Okay so Lam is  category four and is hitting the Northern Territories ... Marcia jumped from category one - to a category five - most unusual - so that's the one they are really concerned about I think. The intensity is tighter than in Lam.

Weather fascinates me, I love to hear the updates. I'll go back to the news articles and see what they say. You're close to it so I'm following this topic too.

Two cyclones, weird.

not so weird to have two - but the jump from cat 1 to cat 5 is weird.

I'm not sure where that data came from but Marcia did build up over night. I watched it build up to a Cat yesterday.

The one in NT should fizzle out to a rain depression.

Marcia could head back out to sea. I'm at work and can't check the charts at the moment. I'm no weather expert but I got a bit of practice tracking cyclones when I was in Cairns. This system is a bit further south than ones I've seen. It depends on the sea temperature and I'd guess it would be too cool to support a cyclone—but, I don't know.

I'm pretty sure New Zealand will be safe from this one though. :)

We had 5 inches of rain in the 24 hours to 8am this morning, and 110mm (4 inches) in the last 5 hours.   Cyclone Lam in the Northern Territory has been downgraded to category 2, and Cyclone Marcia has just been downgraded to a category 3, but has caused much damage up north in the Yepoon area and is currently passing over the Rockhampton area.   Marcia is slowly moving south at 20 kph so we'll be getting more heavy rain until tomorrow.  We've ok at home here, we put ag pipes in a few years back and the water soaks through the soil into the pipes and then drains away.   Unfortunately, even though they installed ag pipes in their back yard, my daughter Beths house has flooded downstairs and they are busy trying to clear the mess but the continual rain is keeping the water flowing through the back door and out the front door.   But, we have to remember that this is our wet season, and until recently, these events happened at least once a year.   None of my elders have contacted me, so they clearly aren't worried yet. Don't think I'll need my emergency Go Bag, but its there just in case.
