[We have to be careful about making it sound like facebook and other sites are not allowed, because then apostates get so excited that they pee themselves.

Bob, this is hysterical!!! I literally laughed out loud!!! I didn't even finish reading your post. I will get back to it now. Just had to let you know I LOVED the above comment you made.:lol1:

Yeah because we know how to laugh at "Ourselves".

I originally voted "comply" because i have no problem giving my name, bdate, etc. But i'm certainly not going to trust a site that says upload your passport or something so i changed my vote. That would be ridiculous. The photo is a fake. Facebook does not ask for that sort of things.

i agree. facebook has never asked for that kind of information. if it did i think i would be in real trouble. but if i was asked to provide that amount of information, i would be real suss about the intentions of the creator of the social media. i wouldnt comply and i would report it to the correct authority. (internet safety issues etc.)

I have set my settings so that no one unless i mark them as a JW can see any of my personal information or photos of me. i have cartoon characters or just plain weird things on my facebook page as my profile picture. its safer.

I too think that picture is a fake and I would not give them those details. But I do give my real name and some limited personal details if I can block the personal details from being visible to everyone.

This past weekend we went to our circuit assembly. There is a symposium part that deals with social networking. I won't spoil it for anyone, but I will say that the talk at our assembly was excellent and very balanced.

I suppose it depends on what you want to go on social media sites for...if you are only going to have contact with those you know...it would not really matter because you have privacy controls.

But...if you are looking to meet new people ...you would put something about your self on your profile...otherwise I do not see the point of going on there.

I have my real name on FaceBook and JWTalk. idclair is an alias but my real name is underneath. I keep up with my oldest son on Facebook. Also i have made friends with Russian JWs and they have sent/posted wonderful pictures/posts for me to look and read. Since i am the only person in my family that is a baptised JW , i really appreciate getting to know other JWs. Would never have known Sianrose and JWs in and outside Arizona [uSA] and other countries, otherwise.

I have used my full "real" name on two websites, this one and another "Witness" site. For Google+ and everywhere else, I use Chuck Musky (Not my real surname) and have not had a problem with Google +. How would they even know it wasn't my name or not?

Hi Chuck, i see the first vote post has changed. The question as to "how a social network such as Google+ knows if a person is registering their real name or not?" Thats a good one. Would they use the websites that can track a person down? I have used White Pages to look up people and their address and phone number. Can the Computer programmers that work for Social networks use those means to check up on ppl? I have used Google from their beginning and i think they have all the info about me including home address and land-line phone number. But if people wants to hide i suppose they can make an alias.

This is a funny and true story. My husband Joe, after he retired in 1996 got fed up with telemarketers calling our home phone. We then had Ma Bell, but when we changed to Cox Cable and went with the package deal of phone/ISP/Cabletv , he talked Cox into listing his name in the Phoenix phone book as Gustavus Adolphus. I know he did not have to pay extra for this because he had complained that he was not going to pay to to get his name unlisted in the phone book. I still don't understand his thinking, maybe that it would take the telemarketers years to start calling that name. But  not only did we start getting phone calls for Gustavus Adolphus, but junk USA snail mail addressed to him. Can you figure?:?

Yes, the telemarketers are relentless! LOL

I've used an "Internet alias" from the beginning, all of my email services (mostly Gmail) have never had my real name. Of course, if they were to trace my IP address through my ISP they could get my name and address with no problem, I believe they would need a court order for that. But I'm not really trying to hide from anybody "legitimate" just the casual nutcases on the Internet!
