The BBC Russian website has published a report on three possible reasons why JWs cannot be removed from the list of extremist organisations.

Highlights of the report:

Interestingly, the Russian leader's press secretary has confirmed that Putin has already met the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Lebedev, to discuss the JW ban. Lebedev says that JWs are not being prosecuted for their beliefs, but for breaking the extremism law. He added that the Supreme Court cannot change laws, but can only enforce them. He also said that if the ECHR ruled in favour of JWs, the Russian Supreme Court would be ready to review the process.

Here are the three reasons in a nutshell:

1) Nobody can tell courts what decisions to take because they are "independent"

2) Laws can be changed, but not court decisions

3) The Supreme Court is waiting for a ECHR ruling on JWs
