I had always wondered why this wasn't a thing already. It is, in the most basic and pure form... fencing with lights.

 

Would be rather interesting to see this being played as a "sport" though.

For a long time there have been lightsaber dueling clubs amongst the fandom, with the skills based upon real historical sword arts. In the lore of the franchise there are 7 main "forms" of lightsaber art (and some additional misc ones), and each have a very different approach and methodology to dueling. 

 

Clubs here and there (mainly in the US) have tried to pick out and match real life sword arts from history, to these 7 forms in the SW franchise as best as possible (and so it varies from club to club as there is no "offical set tradition or rule" on such, being open to personal interpretation due to it being fictional).

 

I do wonder if this offical sport will be doing such a thing, or if they will keep it simplistic.
