There was a sister who was gardening in a city and she said that, because dogs were kept confined,

rabbits would run rampant through peoples'  yards and she said she couldn't keep them out of her

garden.

 

We don't have  an overabundance of rabbits on our farm, but we do have a whole lot of deer.

Deer don't just eat fruits and veggies, either.  They even devour my flower gardens.

 

One fall, I had two fifty foot rows of carrots ready to harvest.  I planned to do it the next day.

One day too late.  I went out the next morning and there were two fifty foot trenches.

The deer had pawed the entire crop up overnight and munched them all down.

 

I tried using manikins, playing a blaring radio.  

 

Neither of these methods worked...for long.

The deer soon realized the manikins weren't real people and they got used to the music.

 

 

Some people surround their gardens with electric fence, but deer can jump so high it takes

a very tall fence.   Some say you can go to a zoo and get lion poop and place it around your

garden to ward off the deer.   But we don't have any zoos nearby.

 

Some place netting over their strawberry patches to keep the birds from eating all the berries.

 

Anybody found a successful way to keep critters from harvesting your fruits and veggies before you do?

We do have deer, but not so many that they would munch their way through a crop!! 

My main problem is slugs they can decimate a plant overnight,  I use organic methods... so I put down beer traps and crushed egg shell

I've used beer traps, too.  Once got a skunk really drunk.

There is an expression 'drunk as a skunk' but I didn't think skunks drank alcohol..

The skunk was eating the drowned escargot and must have gotten drunk that way.

Drunk skunks are mean.  It tore up all of my aluminum pie tins and tried to chase me.

Couldn't run in a straight line, though.
