The McGill coin sorter is a device that got me interested in math. I didn't have one, but a traveling ice cream man did. Knowing my family almost never could afford ice cream, I watched the ice cream seller make change without looking down at this coin belt and was determined to do that.  I  comforted myself by knowing those ice cream eaters would  be satisfied for a short time, but learning a skill could last a lifetime.  Walden, or Life in the Woods  published in 1854, recounted the two years, two months, and two days that Henry  David Thoreau had spent in a cabin at Walden Pond- Concord, Massachusetts. Essayist,  Naturalist, and Abolitionist, he and his family were part of the underground railroad. Many of his family members were also stricken with consumption, which took his life.
