The construction of sustainable and environmentally friendly structures for residential and commercial purposes is one of the more significant challenges of our time. As the built environment continues to encroach on natural habitats worldwide, architects have begun to alter their approach to constructing homes and offices, often taking the lead from nature itself.

Evergreen Architecture: Overgrown Buildings and Greener Living, released last month by Gestalten, surveys a wide array of institutional, residential, rural, and urban structures that directly interface with their surrounding environments. The book explores completed projects and theoretical designs that utilize green roofs, vertical gardens, and skyscrapers that support hundreds of trees,

If I ever HAD to live in an apartment in a city, this is what I would want my apartment building to look like :D

Nature and architecture have never been more intertwined. As more of the earth's surface is swallowed up by the built environment, architects are increasingly up to the task of integrating flora and greenery into their creations. There are many ways to express this: green roofs, living walls, indoor courtyards and entire facades filled with plants. But where these are posed as solutions there are yet more questions. How does a skyscraper uphold the weight of hundreds of trees? How do residents keep moss-covered walls alive? Jungle Architecture explores this, and much more.

Yup.  When you can't get close to Nature, get Nature close to you. :D

I'd be ok with it as long as it could be contained. I'm claustrophobic and need visual space. I live in the PNW and see how quickly brush and trees can grow. So I'd need to be able to cut whatever is growing a few times a year.

Interesting concept, maybe it'll be our reality in the coming system.
