customer service in a western English-speaking country

Recommended Posts

Is it different from that of Korea, Japan and China?

In these countries, it’s basically a concept that someone who serves at a counter or something like that

should be nice and kind by words and facial expressions and intonation or something like that.

But it’s totally okay if there’s no conversation or even if it’s mechanical.

People who buy don’t have to even look at those who work at the counter.

No one thinks it’s rude.

And when I was living in Australia, I felt like customer service meant more than just being nice..

People at the counter seemed to want to talk to me one on one and really have a conversation, even if briefly.

But when I didn’t want to do that, obviously it was rude. And buying something at a market started to get hard haha

Of course, in a very large marker, this didn’t happen.

I think the way it is in Australia is better,I've heard the culture is very hospitable in Australia,I would really love to visite someday.

I like a place where people like to know one another, greet one another and exchange pleasantaries generously, rather than just a brief "Hi"

Not all Australians are as you say hospitable or friendly.  In small regional areas you will find most are friendly because they usually know everyone.  In larger cities no such friendliness.  Good customer service in many businesses is lacking here.  When I go walking early morning in my town of around 5000 people not everyone will acknowledge me with a 'Hi" or smile.  Though I live in a small country town we belong to a big shire which is very diverse in demographics.  All in all because of the truth we try to be friendly to everyone.

I find Australians are a quite hospitable and laid back people. As for customer service, it’s mostly a reciprocal thing - if I’m pleasant as a customer, the server goes the extra mile. I tend to think it’s more genuine too, as we don’t normally tip.

There are exceptions of course. Sydney is a fast paced city. Less chance for pleasantries. But the slower pace of country towns and regional areas is refreshing.

Customer service in Japan by comparison is admittedly more formal. But I really enjoyed how they bent over backwards for me, felt quite special and spoilt. And I could see they also appreciated that I as a tourist took an interest in their culture- and they also went that extra for me.

Bottom line - Golden rule and you can’t go wrong.
