NW Scheduler/Publisher - Updates, Support, and Suggestions

Recommended Posts

So curious if anyone has seen this. I am updated in both Scheduler and Publisher. The option to select 'Hospitality' is gone? we have been using this feature for a year now. I unchecked that option in App settings. Additionally, the PT entries have the hospitality option checked. Re-checked the settings option, added a different mail and still no joy. Any ideas on the fix?

Same here. Kinda unusual: 4.0.10 seemed like it worked fine. Now this... the constant instability is making this app pretty useless right now.

MESSAGE TO DEVELOPERS: Here's an idea: once you get everything working again, how about DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING for another 6 months or so! Maybe we have enough advanced clever features... maybe we can just let everyone in the congregation learn to use what is there RIGHT NOW. If this prolonged error phase continues, some congregations will likely pull the plug - we would rather spend hours in the ministry than hours fighting this app!

To resolve this problem with 4.0.11 you have to delete the entry in red in the error message that pops up. It warns you but press yes. Upon restarting the app all the entries for your Assignments, Duties, Reports and Upcoming are gone. Open settings then About and click on Refresh Data, ignore any warning.

It will repopulate the app with your personal data.

At least 2 friends in my congregation is getting this. Its always something.

This is not true.  I have NWP installed on my phone and tablet, and use both regularly.  And yet still receive the reminder to submit my report.  Others are getting the same.

And to say there is nothing they can do about it.  Write better code!

By using NWP on your phone and tablet, you are directly going against their advice, but then you complain it doesn't work the way you think it should.

Even JW Library does not synch between phone and tablet. Have you also complained to WHQ and asked them to write better code?!

Have you checked that this publisher has hospitality ticked on their 'Assign' tab?

If they don't, try ticking it and then sending app data.

I have sent the following and it seems to work in at least for 2 publishers.

Quote

I have seen the loading error before from another publisher.

I asked the brother / sister to :

(1) if the error message continues after powering your device off and turning it back on- you may have to

(2) uninstall app, then power off the device and then

(3) power on the device and reinstall the app and then

(4) input the proper information that you received when you started using the app. It came from the cobe or secretary in an email or text.

Please retain that info for your future use.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. NW publisher is  a 3rd party app that is subject to glitches and inconvenient errors.

Another issue with Scheduler since the 8.1 update, is that every time I open it there is "Public Speaker Congregations" data to send.

Anyone else get this?

I had been experiencing exactly this immediately after the 8.1 update. Then a subsequent minor version update had seemed to have resolved it for a time. But now I'm experiencing it once again every time I open NWS.

I was thinking about this. I don't know the way NWP handles those notifications now, but it sounds like it isn't checking the report in the best place.

Every time you start NWP it could check, not whether your report was sent from that device, but whether it was received by the secretary. This information is available on NWP, since the group overseer can see who has sent it and who hasn't.

If the publisher has sent his report, no notifications are necessary. If he hasn't, then send a notification.

Of course I am not a developer, but this sounds like a logical procedure. I don't even have NWP on two devices and yet have received a lot of notifications this month requesting my report. I think this could be improved. Just saying that's the way it is designed to work is not reasonable IMO. :)

I have a hard time emphasizing to the shared brothers the importance of keeping their NWS installation updated to the latest minor version.

I always let them know when a new minor version is released and from time to time remind them of the devs strong encouragement to always run the latest version.

I'm wondering if by deleting those that continuously fail to update, it would force them to always install the latest version. 🤔

I personally have numerous devices and don't experience any issues.

I don't either think that is the issue.

We had a lot of problems with that but not anymore.  Our brothers are told never to update until the secretary schedules a "Coordinated Update."  Everyone stays on the same version until the Sunday he picks.  Then on that day - no one edits or sends app data until he gives the green light.  Everyone updates on that same 'down for maintanance' day.  If a brother is out of town we just remove him temporarily from Shared Persons and restore him when he returns.  It has worked beautifully 2 times now and we are all always on the same version.

We have typically been waiting until a few minor versions come out so more bugs are patched and we don't have to have the Coordinated Upates too often.

That's brilliant. Thanks for sharing the idea. Any negatives to that approach so far?

I would have 1 Person and 24 Duties waiting for me to send. I have no idea where that came from but after clearing or sending it several times it seems to have gone away.

No, we have not had any negative issues.  We anticipated there would be some unexpected hiccups but there really haven’t been.

The key is communication.

Weeks before the first coordinated update we created a WhatsApp group thread called Shared Persons.  The thread is not used for anything else except NWS.  All the elders and ministerial servants get the same messages at the same time.  They know when the coordinated update will take place.  They know when there is a green light to use NWS again after everyone is updated.  We also can send reminders, work arounds for new issues, and answer questions.  This WA thread alone has saved me a lot of phone calls and texts from individual brothers with tech issues.

I sent a request to support, and their kind but generic reply was thoroughly check the help/support section. Which I had done before contacting them. But I went through the steps again and supplied all the screen shots.

Has anyone dealt with this?

We don't use the hospitality request feature but I turned it on to test. Followed their instructions at https://nwscheduler.com/how-to/schedule/schedule-public-talks-local/#Request_Hospitality_via_NWP. Everything appeared to work, including having the request button show up in the NWP app.

However, when importing the request via NWS, it does not show up as scheduled in the Public Talk - Local section or in the weekend meeting info in NWP.

Disregard my previous post. We don't use the hospitality request feature but I turned it on to test. Followed their instructions at https://nwscheduler.com/how-to/schedule/schedule-public-talks-local/#Request_Hospitality_via_NWP. Everything appears to work for us, including having the request button show up in the NWP app.

Very odd we have been using the feature for a while now maybe two years. So I think I am up to speed on how to make it work. And this is a recent issue with the request button gone.

There was a recent change to the 'Public Talks - Local' section of NWS.. specifically to the 'Hospitality' option. Before, there was only a checkbox to select if the speaker was available or not. That has now changed to it having it's own drop-down field. The instructions I found previously seem to be up-to-date.
