Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi rebels say they have seized an Israeli cargo ship in the Red Sea.

They said the vessel was then taken to a port in Yemen.

Israel said the ship was not Israeli, and no Israelis were among its crew. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said this was "another act of Iranian terrorism".

Iran has not commented. Houthis had threatened to hijack Israeli ship within their reach over Israel's war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Yemen's Houthi rebels seized the Israeli-linked cargo ship in a crucial Red Sea shipping route on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023, officials said, taking over two dozen crew members hostage and raising fears that regional tensions heightened over the Israel-Hamas war were playing out on a new maritime front. The ship is owned by the British-based Ray Car Carriers, it is registered in the Bahamas, and is operated by the Japanese-based operator NYK Line.

There were 25 crew members aboard, from several nationalities.

The relation with Israel is because Ray Car Carriers is associated with Abraham Ungar, one of the richest men in Israel, according to Forbes.

I asked about the cargo inside because it seems the ship was returning to Japan.

So why this particular ship?

Looks like piracy to me... It wasn't that long ago that Somali pirates ran amok in those same seas...smh...

Many of the ships are now forced to go around South Africa which as almost a full month to the trip, and is much more expensive.

Even that route is not completely safe, as there are vicious bands of pirates of the West African coast, especially off Nigeria and Cameroon
