Crocheting

Katty

Recommended Posts

So, after my baby was born, and I was looking for something to do while breastfeeding, I got into crocheting.
When I get pics on the computer, I'll share what I've done so far. I've done a dolly and a bunny rabbit. They're not great, but they kinda look like what they're supposed to be. I'm working on sunflower granny squares rn.
I thought learning would be a lot harder, but once you get the general principle of what makes up a crochet stitch, it's actually really easy. I tried to learn knitting, but I didn't like it. Having a needle without a hook, just doesn't make any sense to me, now.
Anyone else here crochet?

So, until I start taking pics of what I've done so far, I wanted to share some materials that helped me, in case others might want to learn. Honestly, I thought it would be really hard, but it turns out in crocheting, you're building chains on top of chains, and you're always either:

1. wrapping a bit of yarn around the crochet hook, before poking the hook into the previous chain
2. or wrapping a bit of yarn around the crochet hook, after poking the hook into the previous chain, and then pulling it through the chain.

This blog right here has a lot of the images that have helped me:

https://sarahmaker.com/how-to-crochet/

such as this one:

how-to-single-crochet-chain.jpg.webp

The above is a US half double stitch, UK double stitch.
A single stitch is a lot simpler.

I love to crochet too! I didn't always though. I learned the basics from my Mom in my younger years and didn't seem to have the patience to sit and do it long enough to finish anything. I dabbled with it off and on over the years and then more recently I decided to give it another try because I was needing something to do that would be good for my mental health as well as good therapy for my hands.

I lost my Mom in 2020 and when I think of crochet, I think of her. She loved it and made so many beautiful things. I have made my youngest daughter a couple of throw blankets and dish cloths. I am working on a sunflower granny square blanket. I also like making amigurumis. And I made some baby hats and matching booties. Several other things but I don't want to make this comment go on to long. I'm glad to find someone else who crochets!

(I will try to attach a few pictures if I can. I hope to see your pictures soon! )

minims and quavers

https://shanemcdonald.ie/music/learning-types-of-music-notes-crotchets-quavers-minims-etc/

The first bar has a minim, which is 2 beats and a crotchet which is 1 beat = total of 3 beats. The second bar has 2 quavers, each a half beat each, and we have 2 crotchets, therefore we get 2 half notes + 2 whole notes = 3 beats. Finally, the last bar as a crotchet and a minim again totalling 3 beats. Hopefully you can see below how the music notes are used for timing of beats and how long you play the notes for.

Didn't know we had a crocheting thread going until now...

Very nice work, Amanda !

I too crochet & have enjoyed it for years, Often have two or three projects going at a time.

Love listening to the broadcast while crocheting, it's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

However, been branching off recently into diamond dotting.... Anyone else into the dotting ?

Thank you Elizabeth!! Do you crochet, or craft?

Yes I crochet and sew clothing and bags ...crafting it depends on what it is.

I know what you mean about getting another hobby but it's really a lot of fun !

Very inexpensive and they turn out beautifully.

Most people frame the work even if it's just a greeting card.

Do a search on diamond dotting... many Instructional videos and it's quite simple.

You apply tiny little dots to a prepared picture either on coasters,Magnets,canvas...

during the pandemic, we sent diamond dotting greeting cards to all of our elders

filet crochet

Quote

Filet crochet is a crochet technique that combines “open mesh” stitches and “closed mesh” stitches to create visual images (like filling in graph paper). An open mesh consists of a double crochet and 2 chains, while a closed mesh is 3 double crochet. When you look at the project, the open mesh squares let the light in while closed mesh is solid. The placement of the solid, closed-mesh squares creates a visual image.

Crocheting and knitting are craft activities that are cognitively stimulating and can help promote healthy brain aging and dementia prevention, especially when done in social settings.

If you do not know how to crochet, it is never too late to learn! I taught myself by reading a book and watching free videos online

It's a good idea for me in my old age to learn something new. I can get cheap yarn and knitting needles from the thrift shop. I have always hesitated because of my ADHD. It is getting worse with age. Thanks Sister 'Not Accepted'/GG

How 'Not' Changes Everything: Brain Interprets Negated Adjectives - Neuroscience News

Researchers found that negating adjectives with “not” affects how our brains interpret their meaning, mitigating rather than inverting their definition. In lab-based experiments, participants took longer to process phrases like “not bad” compared to “good” or “bad.”

Brain imaging showed initial interpretations of negated adjectives were similar to their affirmative counterparts but weakened

Even as a brother, truthfully, making bracelets and crocheting (my grandma taught me), helps my AuADHD. Male friends have thrown around "gay" or girls do that. But I don't really care anymore. I'm only trying to impress my wife. A lot of the creative things women do. Actually are very helpful for brain health. I think it's a focus thing and I'm a hyper vigilant type. I love undoing rats nests of cables and it's like that to me. I guess? But again it helps.

Crochet is quite popular among men where I am, they call it Brochet!

I find it calming to have something to do with my hands.
