Windows 7 problem

Recommended Posts

Hoping to get some advice from all you "geeky" Brothers ( or Sisters !)

I have used Windows XP for about 8 years with absolutely no problems.

I decided to get a new computer with Windows 7 as the old XP was getting slow.

I ordered a computer from a BTO company.

The specs as follows

Windows 7 64bit Ultimate full version (DSP)

Intel ® Core i5-3450 processor (3.1-3.5GHz / 4 cores )

Intel ® B75 Express Chipset

500GB Serial-ATA II

DDR3 1333 4GB x2 (8GB total) [Dual Channel]

24x Super Multi Drive

Intel HD Graphics (integrated graphics CPU)

Monitor : Flatron E2341

I had it for three days and then suddenly the system crashed like someone had pulled the plug. There was no BSOD.

It restarted but the same thing happened two or three times then it went to a situation where it would not even boot up.

I contacted the BTO company and they asked me to return it.

It came back with the information that they replaced the CPU.

I used it for a day but then the same thing happened but this time it restarts

and I can use for a while. After the shutdown The BIOS screen shows up and countdowns to restart.

This has happened about 20 times altogether

I am not a computer wiz but I know enough to check the event viewer which had a critical error Kernel-Power Event 41.

The computer experienced an unexpected shutdown. ( I could work that one out by myself !)

I sent it back again and they had it for about a week and a half and they put it through a battery of tests

but could not reproduce the problem. They replaced the RAM and PSU also.

However when I got it back ......same problem

So I have sent it back for a third time and still waiting to hear

Of course I hope they fix the problem but I am a little lost as I have used XP for a long time and I never experienced anything like this.

Is this a windows 7 common problem?

I have googled it and some seem to have this problem but not usually with a brand new computer.

Thanks in advance for advice.

Steve this sounds more like a hardware problem rather than a software problem.

My bet is the CPU overheating. Do a search for overheating on the model of PC you bought.

I also feel that it is a hardware issue and not a software problem.

It sounds to me that the motherboard is bad. They keep changing components like the CPU and RAM and even the Power supply, but that won't help if it's the motherboard (main board) that is bad.

Thanks for the replies.

I checked the temp of the CPU when I was using it before

All 4 cores run at between 27-31 C

Fans are running

But if it is the MOBO, why does it run for 3-4 hours with no problem then suddenly cut out?

If the Motherboard was bad wouldn't that prevent the computer from running at all?

I am still waiting to hear from them about this...

At least I have my XP ........

I have seen this before. The motherboard may have a bad or weak solder joint and as the board heats up it expands, and this joint separates until it loses connection and causes the shut down. It's very hard to detect. And it depends on what you are doing that causes the temperature to go up, even slightly. Videos, games, anything that makes the CPU work harder and thus heat up a little more will cause it. Even the computer just being on long enough to heat up that joint and cause the separation.

I would tell them you want a whole different computer or a different Motherboard before they send it back.

That makes sense.

I will insist on that

Appreciate the advice
