You brought up a good topic that I have always wondered about. What about uTorrents? I have been told that as long as you download it to your computer and NOT put them on DVD/CD's then it is legal. There is no difference if you bought a VCR and taped the movie or show.

I use uTorrent since I can find a lot of my shows with the closed captioning that I need.

uTorrent is a great program. I use it extensively for downloading live concerts - usually audience recordings but sometimes good soundboard recordings are made available. I have been able to hear a lot of classical music that I otherwise would not have heard.

I know it can be used to download films too, but legal issues arise with sharing movies.

Exactly. Now the site I uses claims that all is paid for by the advertisements that's on the site. I only download the DVD rips, I don't do the CAM stuff. That is completely illegal. Sneaking a video camera into the movie theater and taping the movie.

Both are illegal because both are copying the movie. This is a big issue with the recording industry right now. They track torrent downloads and file sharing, and if they can determine who you are, they will sue you for downloading music instead of buying it. I think the movie companies are just as much in a pickle about it. They are constantly taking people to court.

I will admit that I will download music via torrents, but when I find an artist I like or a song I like, both the song or album is often dirt cheap over at Google Music.

My Dad put me on to a site..he use to get movies of a website I have forgotten the name. but one time he went to download and it came up with the FBI

signs, the company had been closed down. they could make the website available because they sold drugs and had there fingers in a few different illegal fields.

I agree about downloading movies and music (cds) being illegal, whether it is a dvd rip or a cam, or from a released cd. I use a site called dime-a-dozen which hosts a list of live concerts etc which are not illegal to download, nor will it list music where the artist has requested that they refrain.

My beef with the music/movie industry is that you can hear music very easily before deciding whether to buy the album, - Spotify, last.fm etc etc - but when it comes to movies it is very difficult to assess beforehand if one wants to commit one's cash to purchase a dvd. A brief trailer which is designed to make you think that it is fantastic, when it ends up being a real load of tripe!

The only time it is legal to download is if there are advertisers on the site. Their fees pays for the movies basically. Which I am perfectly comfortable with. Someone like myself, who makes min wage at part time don't have the luxury to take my family to the movies, nor do I even have the dollar to get Redbox, which frankly has NOTHING in it.
