The loud belch echoed through the ship’s speakers, leaving George momentarily speechless, until he leaned toward Communications Officer N. Chillada and whispered, “Let’s hope in their culture that’s not a sign of war—but just in case, prepare the dessert tray; maybe a slice of peace pie will keep things on track!”

The clippitybopper captain stood again on three feet tapping a rhythm with the fourth once again, but more slowly than before and with an icy stare and a slight grin.

George felt a bead of sweat form on his brow as he observed the clippitybopper captain’s deliberate rhythm, the icy stare sending a shiver down his spine while the slight grin hinted at either amusement or impending mischief, prompting George to cautiously say, “Captain, your rhythm is captivating—does it signal approval, or should we prepare for something… spicier?”

Before the clippitybopper captain could answer a loud squelch came from the comm system overriding the clippitybopper signal followed by a momentary silence and a synthesized, multiphased voice announced, "Lower your shields and surrender your ships as we will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own and your culture will adapt to service us ... resistance is futile"

George’s heart sank as the chilling words echoed through the bridge, and with a heavy sigh, he turned to his crew and said, “Stand down and lower the shields—we’re no match for this kind of power, but maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to preserve who we are, even in surrender; after all, tacos may not stop them, but unity might.”
