HarmonyOS issue JW Library update chrome or webview

Recommended Posts

I have a Huawei tablet I bought on Aliexpress and it updated to HarmonyOS 2 some years ago. I have been able to use JW Library normally but I never found a way to remove that error message. I have a more recent webview installed but the system setting to change the webview engine is disabled and doesn't allow you to choose another. I never found a solution. Maybe we can write Huawei about it.

I already tried to install chrome webview from Google etc but unfortunately no change. It's not a nuisance but I thought the solution would be very simple :) but since you write that you never found a solution it's not comforting 🙂

It should be as simple as installing either an updated Chrome browser or the webview engine app, then selecting it as the default webview engine in system settings. In Developer Settings there is an option Webview Implementation where you can choose the one you prefer. Unfortunately, this setting only shows the Huawei webview, so thre is no way to choose another.

I had an old version (v12) of Huawei WebView, so I installed the most recent (v15) from this site:

https://www.huaweiupdate.com/huawei-webview-updated-to-14-0-2-309/

It made no difference. I think the problem is not that Huawei's WebView is outdated, but that JW Library doesn't recognize it as a valid engine. It wants Android's one.

I sent an email to Huawei Support, let's see if they are helpful.

I'm thinking exactly the same thing

You may find that Huawei products may prevent certain apps from working, as most governments are somewhat suspicious that these products can be used for surveilance by the Chinese. Thus I wouldn't be surprised that the device itself will not allow JWLib to work, as they also block access to the organisations website.

I don't think that's the issue in this case. JW Library works fine, it just throws an error message when it starts that makes me think it will eventually stop working at some point. It also allows me to visit all sites, including JW.org and JWTalk. I think those are filtered in China with a nation-wide proxy, but I am not in China. :)
