TO: Comrade All Said Abdella Minister of Internal Affairs

Rec [A Group Called] JEHOVAH

A group of people, calling themselves "Jehovah, who are Eritreans by birth, but who have revoked their Eritrean citizenship by their refusal to take part in the referendum, have now reconfirmed their position by refusing to take part in the National Service, thus deciding to revoke their citizenship. Therefore:

1. They may not be allowed to work in any governamental office, and, if they are already employed, they shall heretofore be dismissed therefrom.

2. No trading license may be issued to them, and, if any already have in their possession any license, this shall be withdrawn.

3. They may not be given any document showing their identity, no travel document or anything similar should be given to them, and whatever is in their hand should be taken away. As it is necessary to implement these measures I would like to remind the Ministry of Internal Affairs to follow through on this.

Jehovah’s Witnesses in Eritrea have faced severe persecution for decades, drawing widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and experts. In 2016, the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea reported that the persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses since 1991 amounts to a crime against humanity. (HRC Eritrea) The U.S. Department of State’s 2023 International Religious Freedom Report highlights that Jehovah’s Witnesses in Eritrea continue to face arbitrary arrests, imprisonment, and denial of citizenship, with many detained without charges for their conscientious objection to military service. (U.S. Department of State) Additionally, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has documented the global persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses, noting Eritrea’s particularly harsh treatment, including imprisonment without trial and denial of basic civil rights. (USCIRF) These reports underscore the ongoing human rights violations against Jehovah’s Witnesses in Eritrea and the international community’s condemnation of such actions.

Having done prison time in my younger and more foolish days, it was bad enough having to endure it but with an end-date in sight. However, not having a day you can look forward to being free—especially from such a terrible environment as we have heard Eritrean prison conditions to be—I'm sure this must feel like cruelty upon cruelty done them. It has got to be so much more disheartening. The brothers and sisters in Eritrean prisons most certainly need our prayerful petitions to endure in their faith.

What wicked reasoning this is in saying it is their own fault  that their citizenship was revoked. It's like a robber who shoots the homeowner and blames the homeowner for resisting being robbed.
