How to Refute Trinitarian Arguments Based on Colossians 2:9

Recommended Posts

Although I’m young, I’m starting out in the world of apologetics. Here are some arguments that have worked for me and may help you in the field ministry. :)

After asking, “Does the fact that something or someone is of a divine nature/essence make them Almighty God?” possible Trinitarian responses and how to respond:

Yes. How would you explain 2 Peter 1:4, which mentions those of heavenly hope as partakers of the divine nature?

No. Why claim that Jesus is Almighty God based on this same premise?

After reading 2 Peter 1:4, possible Trinitarian responses and how to respond:

No, it’s different. They don’t become God. If having a divine nature doesn’t imply being Almighty God, then Jesus’ divine nature doesn’t make him Almighty God either.

They are shares of the divine nature, but not in the same sense that Jesus is. The text makes no distinction. If sharing the divine nature doesn’t make the anointed ones Almighty God, then why would it be any different for Jesus?

The text is symbolic. / It doesn’t apply literally. If 2 Peter 1:4 is symbolic, would it not be inconsistent to interpret Jesus’ nature literally in order to prove that he is God?

But in Jesus dwells all the fullness of the divine quality; this isn’t the case with the disciples. (A) Colossians 1:19 indicates that it was God’s will for all fullness to dwell in Jesus. This proves that he received it from Jehovah, not that he always had that fullness. (B) If all fullness dwelling in Jesus implies that he is Almighty God, and according to the Athanasian Creed the three persons of the same God are coequal, why is the Son not, according to the Bible, equal with the Father in power and authority? (Joh 5:19; 6:38; 14:28; 1Co 15:28)

The term "divine quality" was used by ancient Greek writers to describe a quality or condition that could be obtained or lost as a result of one’s behavior. Obviously, then, such a term was applied to created beings and not exclusively to the almighty and eternal God, Jehovah. So there is solid basis for rendering the·oʹtes to refer to a divine quality rather than to God himself.

To overturn the Doctrine of Trinity, you have to demolish it brick by brick by first proving the uniqueness of Jehovah, the uniqueness of Jesus

and finally the identity of the holy Spirit (not the same as the holy Ghost).

I discover that a lot of people believe in trinity doctrine without really knowing what it is all about.

I find it useful to always begin by helping the householders to really understand what the doctrine of Trinity is all about.

That God the father,God the son and God the holy Spirit is the same person existing in three different form.

The very idea irritates some people already because it simply doesn't make sense once they are able to understand that Jehovah and Jesus are two different people, this demolishes a significant part of the doctrine.

Identifying the holy Spirit becomes a separate topic,no longer a trinity discussion.

Something that always makes me suspicious about the doctrine of the trinity is this relativization of the relationship between the Son and the Father. He is omnipotent, but has less power than the Father. He is omniscient, but He knows neither the day nor the hour of the end and the revelation has to be given to Him by the Father. We must worship him even though the Bible never shows him asking for such worship.

The Jesus of the Trinity is a poor thing; he is a God that remains in heaven with the same human body forever and is in subjection to the Father in everything. While Jesus of the Bible is a powerful King who can bring eternal peace to the universe.
