Internet before search engines

Recommended Posts

Imagine NO hyperlinks, No Google or Yahoo, typing web addresses MANUALLY, No mouse, NO touch or flat screens, CD/DVD tech was Science-Fiction, dial-up Internet connect@56k was awesome, and what was wireless? Trine Gallegos hosts this segment that was taped in 1995 when the Internet was first becoming an icon. This is an interesting look back at how clunky the applications really were.

What did people do without Google, YouTube, Facebook, SmartPhones, Twitter, Craigslist, eBay, Apple?

I still do lots of things without apple, Facebook, tweeter, Craigslist... :P

I still type new web addresses manually Lol :P

U remember my first dial up connection being @33kbs and I was stairing to the computer watching a download @3kbs and saying..."wow! This is fast!" (Actually, I really said: "caramba! Isto é rápido!") :)

Who said what is quoted?

I know, it's amazing. Within seconds you can find answers that before Internet and search engines you would have had to go to the library looking for the answers.

It is very very convenient and time saving if used in the right way.

I CAN imagine living without the Internet. But in this world and life it would be really really hard.

I can't wait for a simpler, less stressful time!

besides the wonderful things of the Internet, regarding search engines and the task of finding information, we should note that it's becoming increasingly difficult to find accurate information on any subject... unless you master difficult technics of search methods

when you Google for anything you generally find millions of answers... And the one you want is often far from the first pages

before there were only a few respected sources with available information. today there are plenty but on the other hand anyone can become a source of information... And how can we separate the weeds from the wheat on this gigantic ocean of information? it's difficult......

so true. I grew having to learn to use the library card catalog.

I was using the "Internet" in it's primeval form back in the eighties. It was a group of linked "bulletin boards" that could access some  of the navy's "text sites" and a few universities that were participating.  That was with a green screen monitor and all text, no images or links, etc. That was with a 14.4 dial-up connection!

Then Al gore came along and invented the Internet as we know it!  :lol1:

Interesting read.

We first got a computer in 1990. Before that Dad didn't own one.

Then we finally got the internet 5 yrs ago

Then I came to realize how dependent on the internet I became when we couldn't get the internet connected for a month.

"It's a known fact that eighty decibels of rushing water is one of the most pleasing sounds known to mankind. On other hand, ten and a half days at sea is enough water for anybody."
