Struck: The family were hit by the lightning bolt in their garden in Limbach, Germany

Five members of a family of Jehovah's Witnesses were injured after being struck by lightning during a violent storm.

A grandmother, her two daughters and two grandchildren were all hit by the lightning bolt in the garden of their home in Limbach-Oberfrohna, near Dresden, Germany.

Bild newspaper reports nine-year-old grandson Elias was flown to hospital by air ambulance and remains in intensive care after being knocked unconscious by the lightning strike.

His cousin Cedrick, six, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries along with his mother Ricarda, 32, but the pair have since been discharged.

Elias' mum Judith, 36, and grandmother Oma remain in hospital after falling and suffering head injuries but their conditions are not thought to be serious.

The family had been playing on the lawn when the storm quickly took hold on Thursday afternoon.

It is thought the bolt hit a large tree in the garden and travelled along a large groove running through the grass.

Ricarda told the newspaper she was preparing to chop wood on the lawn when heavy rain began falling.

She said: "It started to rain and we started to collect the toys. Suddenly it popped loudly and without warning.

"Then I felt a tingling sensation from head to toe."

I know more and more news articles mention our religion what does it have to do with a car accident or a house fire stuff like that? Although it does help us know when a brother or sister are injured or need prayers to help them out.

We had that storm hit our area for hours before going eastward to Germany. Wouldn't go out in it, the rain was like a power-shower and it went on rumbling and lightening cracking and pouring through the night - very disconcerting. Hope everyone is OK.

Unfortunate choice of words the folk "have since been discharged ...!"

Here's a photograph of the lightening from our coastline that night:

It's a bit of an old silly tradition that bad people get struck by lightening. I've heard people say "They'll get struck by lightening" when they hear someone cuss or blaspheme. So I reckon stating the poor peoples' faith is a bit of a sly snide/sarcastic dig of a comment by the newspaper because there's no other relavent reason to reveal this otherwise.
