Starsky and Hutch, Laverne and Shirley

Anyone remember these shows?   Came across them on one of the channels I dont normally watch and they brought back so many memories.   Couldnt believe how loud Laverne and Shirley were, but it was fun to watch - and I even remembered the words to their song "We're gonna make it".   Showing my age.

 

Starsky and Hutch, well, Starsky was the man back in those days, and that Ford Torino - wow.   I remember David Soul (Hutch) went on to have a musical career, but couldnt recall what happened to Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky).   Turns out that his wife had a blood transfusion when she gave birth to their first child, a daughter, and the blood was tainted with the HIV virus.   She passed the virus onto her daughter through breast feeding, and then three years later infected their son Jake whilst she was pregnant.  The mother and daughter subsequently died of the disease.  His son is alive and doing well.    But what an absolutely awful thing to happen.   Back in those days not much was known about Aids, it appears everyone avoided them - maybe thats why the show closed, the article didnt say just that he went on to directing films and tv shows - Miami Vice being one.

 

Mind you, the plots for this episdoe of Starsky and Hutch was pretty tame, overacted and no matter how many shots were fired no-one got hurt - couldn't believe we'd actually tear home from work to watch it once a week.   Life was simpler then I guess.

My oldest favorite TV memory was running home at 6PM every Sunday for Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color.

   I remember Lavern and Shirley. it was a spin off of "Happy Days" if I remember right. I have to be honest an

say I always thought the show was kind of "Ditsy". But that's just my opinion. I also remember "Starsky  and

Hutch." Yes, they were considered the "cool guys" back then. Funny how fame is so fleeting. I remember too

when Paul Michael Glasser co-starred in "Fiddler on the Roof". Can't remember the name of the character he

played, but he married the second of Tveye's  daugthers. And as I also recall, I remember listening to Elizabeth

Glasser pleading for more research to be done for a cure for Aids before her death. As you say, that was a real

tradgety. especially since she contracted it through a blood transfusion.

   Speaking of all of this, how much of TV programing there in Australia follows hit shows that we have back here

in the States ? I know England seems to have a lot of its own programing. And if anything I would have thought

most of your programing would have via the BBC. You can continue on what now  seems to bee your role in

enlightening me about things "in the land down under".

   As for my memories of the earliest TV programs.  I remember Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, the Lone Ranger, some

children's shows like 3 local " Uncle Al",  "Skipper Rile", and "Captain Kangaroo". Of course Saturday morning

was the best ( we were not in the truth at this time ), because it was all of the cartoons. And yes I well remem-

ber Disney's "Wonderful World of Color". The thing that was really neat about this show was we at the time only

had a black and white TV. But my grandma had one in color. Since we would normally go to see her on a Sunday.

That was a real treat to us back then, because we could actually see "Disney's Wonderful World of Color" in

color ! Oh if we could retain the simple things that made us excited as kids into adulthood !

I remember when we first got a tv. First thing I ever saw was wrestling matches. I can do better then that. I remember sitting around a radio, listening to, what was it? flash Gordon, the Shadow. (The Shadow knows!) Others too. Hard to go back to the fifties. Memory wise.

Even here where I live now. I can remember rushing home from the meeting on Thursdays to watch some medical show I believe. Before DVD times. Today? We just watched a NOVA special on Monarch butterfly's. It was recorded. Traveling thousands of miles from Canada to Mexico. Cannot figure out how their little butterfly minds can do it. A great mystery of science. But we know, don't we? Just how wonderful is that? Sorry, I digress easily.

Nah, it was another show in the 60's (though I think it originally started in the 40's)!  I saw them on what used to be called 'The CBS Children's Film Festival'!     Don't click, Musky!  ;)

I remember the first color TV show I saw. We were invited over to the neighbors house to see the Wizard of OZ.  mesmerized I was.

The Wizard of Oz was my first movie. At the theater in Orick, California. Those flying monkeys scared the day lights out of me. I was 7 or 8 years old at the time.

Other recent shows that made me almost cringe as I watched were 'Hawaii Five O' and 'Magnum PI' even though I loved Magnum, still love watching Tom Sellick in repeats of his latest tv movies where he's a sheriff in some small town - first his dog died, then his girlfriend died (all these old men in their 60s and 70s have young girlfriends in their 20s in these shows don't they - must have male scriptwriters).   Anyway poor old Tom gets threatened with losing his job every week, must be a harrowing life being a sheriff.   And yes, Michael, they are playing 'Happy Days' as well, which I enjoyed.   Boy, don't our tastes change.  The Fonz wouldn't raise an eyebrow these days. 

 

We used to watch a lot of British TV shows back in the 60s and 70s - tv hadn't been going very long in Oz or NZ then and there werent many production companies around.  As all that replied are in the US, none of you would have heard of any of them.  'Z Cars', 'Maigrait' (he was a French policeman, but they always spoke in English) 'Softly,Softly', 'Steptoe and Son', 'Randall and Hopkirk', and 'The Avengers' had everyone watching to see what kind of leather outfit Emma Peel would be wearing that week.  'Porrige' and 'Open all hours' are two favourites that we watch on DVD over and over, as well as 'Last of the Summer Wine' although not everyone can appreciate or understand English humour.

 

Times have changed and those programmes were all relatively innocent, todays tv shows are getting darker and spookier, even the childrens shows are full of magic and spells etc.   We lived in another age I guess, its all spiralling out of control now.

Any of you ever watch Scarecrow and Mrs.King back in the 80's? It starred Kate Jackson (one of the original Charlie's Angels) and Bruce Boxleitner. She was a housewife reluctantly turned spy. It was on for 4 seasons, the first 3 of which were pretty good. The first episode is flat-out funny.

 

A good, wholesome action show, though I must admit the plots were pretty lame. But that could be said of most shows in the 80's.   You can stream it thru Amazon or Netflix I believe or find it on DVD.

Okay, I'm gonna add "Adam-12," "Emergency!" and "The Andy Griffith Show" to the mix, only because I've been watching those on Netflix. My newest guilty pleasure is BBC's "Sherlock". Watched all nine episodes, and they really need to do more of those!!
