Where do I begin to search for jobs in another country?

Recommended Posts

I have heard of brothers and sisters that teach english online, some clean homes in the country they are staying in but yet I am unable to find anything online about this. Does anyone here serve where the need is greater in another country? What do you or others you know do to support themselves and their families? Is it best we take Tesol? Is their a Tesol course you advise we look at?

Pr 13:20 The one walking with the wise will become wise, But the one who has dealings with the stupid will fare badly.

I am seeking advice from wise fellow believers.

We have young ones and are thinking of Mexico or Ecuador. :)

If you have good working knowledge of English, and ability to at least get by in another language it is often possible to get tutoring jobs in foreign countries.  I have known friends who have done this in Ecuador and a niece in China.

My niece is currently supporting her pioneering in mainland China a an English tutor. Typically the Chinese have taken English in school and want to learn speak  American English.

In China it has to be under the table type work, but that is one of the only ways our brothers are able to pioneer there. My niece puts a notice in English on bulletin boards and has little trouble finding students.

I don't think taking the language teaching course is going to hurt you at all. A number of these online English teaching web sites prefer if you have some sort of credentials behind you. Especially the decent paying ones. Other sites will take into consideration our preaching work.

My wife and I spend a lot of time in Mexico and although we don't need to work while we are there (come home to work every year, not because we are wealthy), we have been offered jobs teaching English at private schools. However, many brothers that do it say that teaching at schools is demanding of their time and energies and the compensation is not that great. So hiring yourself out as a tutor would be a better option (look into the legalities in the country you'll be residing in.)

Is there a way that you can do another form of work on-line? Is there a way of doing what you do now on line or long distance? Look at as many possibilities as you can and then determine if you want to spend the time and resources getting TESLa certified or if you can get trained to do something else that could help you out while you are there.

I'm amazed at what some of our brothers are doing on line to support themselves - website optimization/design. Graphic design (my brother in law owns a graphic/advertising firm in Toronto and he has employees in different parts of the world who work for him online), medical transcription, etc...

Sometimes it's just best to come home for a few months every year. Often (for sure in Canada) you can make more money in several weeks than it would take you all year to make in a foreign country. And if you work it out alright you can work, visit family and friends and enjoy some of the things that you enjoy about living in Canada (even Saskatchewan ;) hahaha) that you miss while you are abroad.

As for your young ones, if you are relocating to a city in Mexico you can either enroll them in the local school or in a private school (this can get expensive). However a lot of Canadians homeschool abroad. Apparently Canada has a really good program for that. So your youngsters primary education shouldn't be a problem.

Congratulations on your goals. You won't regret the spiritual refreshment you'll feel working in a foreign field whether it be in Engish or the local language.

I have been teaching ESL online for Open English for over two years. I don't have a TESOL certificate, but I think it's a good idea to have it, because then you can probably work just about anywhere teaching English. I would recommend checking out Englishtown, I think it's called. They are worldwide and seem to always be hiring. I think Rob was right when he said the pay for teaching in schools can be low and the work tiresome. Especially if it's with kids! It's a good thing to have a job where you can go home for a few months and save up, or something online.

I have never heard of ESL online for open English. Can you please explain? I am curious as we explore all of our family options. :) Thank you so much to everyone as well for their help and kind words.

I have taken Bro. Cotton's course. It is very hands on and it a short time he teaches over a dozen ways to teach others a language they don't know.

I have never tried to get work from that though.

There was a period where I moved congregations, out of Castleford, West Yorkshire, and later moved back to that congregation.

While I was away from Castleford, a brother moved in for a few years and then left.  It was Harry Cotton.  We don't know each other but we have many mutual friends!

Glad to know he's a brother! His course looks fantastic!

Open English is the name of the company I work for (as a self-contractor). ESL means "English as a Second Language" which is the subject. There are other companies like Englishtown and Verbling. You can search for them on the internet. OE probably isn't hiring now, but you can find their application. I work at home through the company, they give me a schedule and material and I teach the class online. If you have any other questions, let me know. :)

The GB has used him and his course for at least 5 years (surely more) to teach brothers who are leading foreign language groups how to teach the language.

His class is amazing.

His teaching methods keep you interested and on the edge of your seat ............on Sat AM we meet for service and the laughter coming from the Farsi class in the back school makes me want to join ....like what am I missing they are having way too much fun.

It's all because they are using Br. Cottons teaching methods..... ...his philosophy is " learning should be fun" . He studied with a brother I know years ago the brother said he learned so much as a kid ......he's a fine elder now.

If your going to teach English it's always better to get some kind of a degree it helps with getting a better salary.

Jerry you never know you just might use that one day .....never hurts to have it under your belt.
