Crafts and Lost Skills You'd like to see back in the New System

Recommended Posts

Alrighty - my first thread on the forum - go easy on me guys.

What has inspired this thread is the 'Day AFTER Armageddon' thread and what I used to do for a living - or partial living.

I draw portraits ... with pencil ... simple and plain. I used to do them down at the market locally.  I had many come up to me and say : "Why would I pay for you to do one when all I have to do is use a 'sketch program' and I get the same result?"

I get a bit sad when technology pushes traditional skills out to the point they are literally non-existent.

I work currently for stonemasons - selling headstones - what a specialised skill! (This could be used in the New System for Kingdom Hall signs or other similar things)

Like my friend who is a brother in another Congregation he does 'rope splicing' and makes wonderful stock whips. He is one of a few who still does it.

The art of watchmaking is no longer an every day occurrence.

Some of these may be able to resurface again, perhaps watchmaking may not have the demand it has now, but we still need accurate compasses etc.

So what crafts that have disappeared now, or are disappearing would you like to see reappear in the New System?

I would like to see hand illustrated and written books again (cover made from geniune leather)

(by the way ...I love pencil portraits ...  ) It would be hard to do a selfie by using pencil only ...  WHICH IS A GOOD THING !    :ecstatic:

look forward to the time when we will use- not abuse - earth natural resources,

and be taught Jehovah's way of making the best use of his gifts...

oils from plants, utilizing hemp and flax and bamboo to make things,

  such as this:

Truly "hand made" wooden items - not carving - more like furniture, cabinets, chests, boxes - all made with "real wood", no plywood, veneer or other such non-wood things in them ... and, if they do have brass or stainless corners or fasteners, real brass or stainless, not "plated" metals.

Not cut with computer assisted devices - power tools OK, but hand operated.

Rug making, welding, blacksmithing, woodworking (as already mentioned). I know these are done today but not much of the real hands on things that takes skill honed by apprenticing then years of fine tuning.

Tatting is something I want to learn. And fine thread crochet for bedspreads/coverlets.

And the amazing thing is Sister Cheryl we WILL be able to learn not just one of those skills, but all of them if we wish! How incredible is that?

I agree sis, I hope to build my own home and furniture but learn how to do the beautiful crown mouldings, carvings, tongue and groove work then top it off with beautiful welded edging and sculptures.

I want to learn it all!

That's the things my son does. He makes beautiful furniture too. Grumpy has remodled some of the big mansion's near us. So impressive.

For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.

Hi Nancee - put Feijoa on your list. They I think originated in South America but it's a popular fruit here in New Zealand. They are oval and green on the outside ... inside they have a pear like consistency in the outer flesh and a mashed banana like consistency in the middle. They are sweet, sour and have a fragrant taste. REALLY nice.

Exodus 31:1

Jehovah continued to speak to Moses, saying:  “See, I have chosen*Bez′al·el+ the son of U′ri the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah.+  I will fill him with the spirit of God, giving him wisdom, understanding, and knowledge of every kind of craftsmanship,  for making artistic designs, for working with gold, silver, and copper,  for cutting and setting stones,+ and for making every kind of wood product.+

This scripture has always amazed me, in that Jehovah filled Bezalel with wisdom, understanding and knowledge of every kind of craftsmanship.  I look forward to learning and using these skills to Jehovah's glory.

Wouldn't that be lovely!

Mary
