MRI can be dangerous

Recommended Posts

As one who does not do well, in the MRI machine, I found this story interesting. It was being discussed at my Physical Therapist's office, and although not today's news, it could be informative to some.

It is about a 6 year old who was killed in an MRI machine as well as other MRI accidents.

Any metal in body can be problematic, such as some older heart stents, pins, etc.

I have had a few of the MRI procedures and they are pretty careful. My career as an eq mechanic and welder has left me with various bits of steel in odd places and I have never had any problems.

The biggest area they concern themselves with is the eyes. I would have to have an x-ray, or sign a waiver, before the procedure.

The chunk that worries me the most is a 5mm x 7mm piece of steel stuck between my ribs, directly over my heart...it has never been a problem.

Neither has my fake knee, but its non-magnetic.

I am a bit concerned about this big ol steel plate in my head tho--I was told to keep my tinfoil hat on, everything will be ok...
