Just curious: what does the society say about organ transplants?

Same as blood fractions - use your Bible trained conscience.

Here is a nice excerpt from "- How Can Blood Save Your Life?" (hb 1990)

The Witnesses do not feel that the Bible comments directly on organ transplants; hence, decisions regarding cornea, kidney, or other tissue transplants must be made by the individual Witness.

Plan ahead as if Armageddon will not come in your lifetime, but lead your life as if it will come tomorrow (w 2004 Dec. 1 page 29)

To me, it sounds a bit like cannibalism -- something Frankenstein-ish to be sure. Of course, these days organ transplants are common place and there is even a black market for human organs. It just doesn't sound like something Jehovah would condone.

Then this is something you should not do. I highly recomend making sure that this gets put on your "Advanced Medical Directive" (some call it your blood card - note: that is a very bad name for it). This would go under item 6 "Regarding Other Health Care Instructions"

When my 32 yr. old son had a kidney and pancreas transplant this past March it was also bloodless. His course of life is not one of serving Jehovah so I was surprised that the doctors would go that route. I then learned that if he had been given a transfusion in the months prior to the transplants he would not have qualified to receive the organs. Transfused blood has all the virus' and antibodies of the donor and carries the potential of destroying the donor organs. Transfusions before, during or after the transplants creates a huge risk. He has done fine with the new organs until he misunderstood the doctors orders and stopped taking a particular drug for `containing' the CMV virus. The donor, as with most people, had the virus previous thus they were in the cells of the organs. Without the drug the CMV cell count went from 0 to 50,000 and had a head start of causing organ failure of not just his donor organs but all his organs including his heart and white blood cells. He had to have a catheter put directly to his heart to inject his medication. After a month his CMV count is down to 1000 and his white cell count is up from 0 to 1.2. His white cell count must be 5 before he can go home. Something I didn't realize about EPO or the newer, faster acting Aranesp is that it also stimulates the production of white blood cells as well as red blood cells. Because transplant recipient's have their immune system shut down by drugs they have to be very careful, a cold can kill them. It does get better for them over time as the new organs get reprogrammed so to speak.

To have a transplant or not is of course a personal choice and one of conscience for a Christian. After being with my son day and night through his ordeal, I find it quit unsettling and leaving myself doubting whether or not I would want it for myself.

Some things we just don't know for sure until/if the time comes for the decision. I always used to say that I'd never take the cancer treatments after watching what it did to my mother,grandmother....etc etc. saying that the treatment is worse than the disease but now with the changes that have been made I do think I would go thru it. This too is something we have to decide for ourselves. I am VERY sure that if I get really bad and can't decide anything for myself then they should put a head set on me and let me listen to the 50's and 60's. Shortly if at ALL possible I will try to dance. LOL

How did you get that video on here? I'd like to put it into an email, without going to the website.

We have a Video button icon.gif in the Editor Tools when you are composing your message. You copy and paste the YouTube address for the video into the dialog box that pops up.

I don't think you can put it in an email without going to the website. At the website, you can grab a "embed" video code and try to paste it into an HTML email message. Might work.
