An article about the history of declining to salute the flag. In fact, they did not get everything wrong, which is rare.

Jehovah’s Witnesses worship God, whose name is Jehovah. As their name suggests, they are “witnesses” to him and his sovereignty – and no nation, flag, piece of cloth or NFL quarterback can take away their determination to remain politically neutral.

The above address has an error. It appears to begin with 'ahttp' rather than  "http'
This one works for me:

Thank you. Not sure how I could change that, really.

This is nothing new. I started school in 1940 and we had to pledge allegiance to the flag every  day. I would not do it, so everyday the teacher gave me a spanking. That kept up for two years, but I never saluted. I never told my folks out of fear of getting in trouble at school. When my dad heard what was

happening, he went to the school board and that put an end to the spankings. At that time there was so much           patriotic fervor, I was pretty much shuned by the kids in the school, but after the Supreme Court said we didn't have to salute, it got much better for me. I was very shy so it was very hard of me.

You would think by the 1970s that things would have gotten better, but I'm sure with the Vietnam War being current, that fanned the patriotic fervor.  I was singled out by my 1st grade teacher for not saluting the flag, but thankfully no spakings involved (just got sent to the principal's office).  Needless to say my mom was up there in a heartbeat!  Middle school, same situation with the National Anthem, wouldn't sing it in choir, so back to the principal's office.  Even at the time as a shy kid, I was pretty resolute :)

I did read this, however, we do not want to be  compared to these athletes and protesters.

We do respect the Government and such, we do not protest out of civil unrest!

We do it as a matter of worship, they do it out of rebellion and protest!

You're right. Of course it's a silly comparison, but we are mentioned as the forerunners, and this issue is much more important than the trivial problems of an athlete.
