All firefighters are being advised that the explosion spread a hazardous material over a large area.  They are being ordered to wash themselves and their trucks off with copious amounts of water and to not allow the debris to remain on their skin.

Sounds like an environmental mess.:(

"Ash was released during the explosion and has coated some area roadways, vehicles, and other surfaces. “It is not hazardous and can be washed off skin with a mild soap and water,” officials said in a release Sunday night.

Other reports — including radio traffic from first responders — have said the substance may be “black liquor,” an industrial byproduct which is toxic and corrosive."

Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

One of the refineries that I worked at used a caustic solution to scrub H2S out of fuel gas, the spent caustic was sold to a local paper mill until it closed. The spent caustic that the refinery sold was the nastiest smelling stuff. If that paper mill was using a caustic solution and it exploded, it would definitely be a hazmat situation. Nasty stuff...

This is horrific for animals and humans! Well, like Fukushima, I guess time will tell how bad the fallout is.

This is terrible Ross. Keep us informed if you keep track of it, or anyone who lives around there.
