I personally know people who hurl abusive words at others all the time and they are quite un-intelligent; even a dog knows when he bites you that it hurts...

Some do, of course, but if you saw a dog who knew that barking in a particular way would cause an desired effect, you'd call that dog intelligent, in a way. A dog who knew many ways to manipulate his world would be considered very intelligent. He has a toolbox with tools to solve life problems and/or make life easier for himself.

A parrot might know the sounds of many words, but not know how to use them. An intelligent parrot would know the words, know what they mean and how to use them.
