Store Cupboard

Recommended Posts

...ok... I'm not talking prepping here!

We've been advised to have enough of a store cupboard for at least a week in case of emergency..

I normally keep a fairly good store and as I'm vegetarian it's easy to store certain foods... but I'm looking to try to be more organised with everything and to be zero waste as much as possible.

I don't have a huge veg garden that I can process... what systems do you use and how do you store?

I'm also in Ireland so we don't have Wal-Mart or large Amish stores 😊

We buy rice and bean in large amounts. Tasty, easy to store. And you may get tired of it, but they are good foods.

Beans, with a hammock, and a salad for dinner. Today.

We still have canned goods, and even bread. (Stored in the freezer.)

We live where a couple of bridges going out, and, we are stranded.

We also keep food for the dogs. At least a month ahead.

Water? Rivers and creeks, and a water straw purifier.

Plus, to do any real shopping, we have to drive two hours one way, or three hours another way.

Sort of a way of life.

I want to age without sharp corners, and have an obedient heart!

What is a hammock that you can eat ? I'd forgotten about dog food. . I have access to shops but I think it's good to have a store cupboard that you could live on for a couple of weeks.

My other problem is storage,  I need to store flour in kilner jars and they can be expensive enough. ..I just had to throw out flour that was in a large screw top glass jar as it had weavils in it

I keep my flour, corn meal, etc. in the freezer. it will kill the weevils.

Is that once you find the weavils?  I read that you can sift them out. ..but I think I'll pass on that

A hammock is a smoked pigs foot. (I know) I also have ham shanks in the freezer. (For our lunch on Wednesday’s after service, I put in a ham shank, (much more meat then a hock) pinto beans, and an onion. Into the crock pot, and, cook it over night. The friends love my beans. Also, salt, if needed. But most of the time not needed.

Flour, etc. We buy in bulk, then use a machine that seals them in plastic. We do that with rice, nuts, meats. Anything that may go stale. And flour. I have plastic sacks. I put it in them, and use the tie wire thingies to keep the critters out. They have all sorts of sizes of plastic bags.

Beans and rice make a complete protein molecule, if I remember right.

Nope..I put the items in the freezer as soon as I get them home. If the bugs are in there, it will kill them..
