Very unusual for us. We had a couple touch down recently just a couple of hours away from where I live.

 

We are not prepared for this as a nation. We have no storm sirens, no storm shelters, and most homes in the UK do not even have basements or cellars.

Things to watch for: Tornadoes tend to be in the leading edge of major thunderstorms. Sometimes the sky turns a green tinge ( Greenage ) and you get a stillness but with lightning. When this happens watch out! Get to the lowest , most interior shelter possible. Preferably in a bathtub or stone or concrete surrounds. The essential danger will be from flying debris.  A blanket might help shield from some small things in an indirect ( out of the wind ) . Expect tiny shards of glass, wood , insulation everywhere.   

    In my area this is among the more common major events that displace people quickly. I’ve been through three of them. My Father five . 

    Take seriously the need to keep a fully stocked 72 hour kit along with essential paperwork.
