Hi,

I am looking for help to find/verify an experience I distinctly remember hearing, I think it was in a special talk or a zone talk. Pretty sure it was before the broadcasts had started.

The experience went this way:

In a land under restrictions the authorities planted a (banned) bible teach book in the oven of this witness couple. They arrived for the search and made a show of looking around other rooms the house instead of going straight for it. In this time a fellow witness had arrived with a pie. Realising they were in the middle of a search the witness elected to place the pie in the oven and sneak away unnoticed. On finding the book in the oven the witness takes the book (knowing it would soon be found by the search team) and left the pie in its place.

Thus when it came for the “aha” moment and the oven was opened all involved were shocked to find a mystery pie in the oven, none more so than the officers who knew they had put a teach book there.

I am certain of hearing this experience however I have no memory  of where I heard it and I wish to verify it before sharing it. It was maybe 5(?) years ago now I remember it being a real talking point after the talk. I believe it was a special talk or zone talk back when link-ups were relatively new. Somehow hoping someone else knows for certain the origin of the story in order to confirm it is not simply a legend.

I did not hear this specific experience, but a similar one. A friend (I think a sister) placed a piece of literature with a woman and when exiting through the outside stairs, the friend noticed through window that  the householder put the mag in the oven, and assumed she was burning it. The sister did not consider going back for some time, but eventually decided to return. The householder went to the oven and brought out the publication. She said she hid it there from her husband.

Y (Nothin says lovin like somethin from the oven)S

I think I may have heard that experience from Brother Steve Elumbaugh although I can’t remember the title of the talk.

I remember hearing an almost identical experience - and having re-told it over and over again because I liked it so much. The main differences were that the neighbour brought over a cake (not a pie) and that she found magazines (not a Bible Teach book) in the oven.

I heard it related by our district overseer, Bro. Ray Cowling (Melbourne, Australia) during his concluding talk at one of our circuit assemblies when I was a teenager. In other words, about 45 years ago. :D

It is probably the same story except I have misremembered the details.

The Nazis also went to the home of Olaf Skau, in Oslo. They ransacked his house and confiscated Bibles, literature, and phonographs. They also sealed Olaf’s book cabinet. The officers did not find the publisher record cards, which had been hidden in the oven. Later, the Nazis returned with a truck to take away the books. The leader was SS-Untersturmführer Klaus Grossmann, a feared Nazi. When Olaf asked Grossmann what they would do with the Bible literature, the officer said that they would make paper pulp out of it.

CLOSE CALLS

During the summer of 1968 there was to be a district assembly in France. This required several months of preparation, since the entire program, including dramas, had to be translated, rehearsed and taped. The Ruas family had an experience in this regard. Celeste tells what happened:

“We finally finished making the tape of the drama on Jephthah’s daughter, and it was left at our home for the next rehearsal. In the morning, at seven o’clock, the doorbell rang. When we asked ‘Who’s there?’ the callers identified themselves as P.I.D.E. agents. I told them to wait a minute until I got dressed. Having already been visited several times by the police, we had little literature in the home, but I immediately remembered the tape. I hurriedly took it to the kitchen, lifted the top part of the gas stove and slipped the tape underneath, putting the top back into place.

“The police entered and began searching the house from top to bottom, finally coming to the kitchen. They were just finishing their search when our daughter Dina walked in, saying: ‘Mother, I’m going to make some coffee,’ and went off to light the stove. What could I do? If I said anything, the tape would be discovered and confiscated. I had visions of seeing hours and hours of preparation go up in smoke. Happily, our daughter lit the burner on the opposite side! The coffee was made and the police never did find the tape.”

This is what I recall as well.

I too remember this story about a pie or cake . I also recall the one about the tape. I remember that the cake or pie was placed in the oven by a relTive or friendly neighbor who saw the hidden literature and took it away for whatever reason only to return it later. Something like that.
