Moving JW Library to new computer

Recommended Posts

Helping a brother whose OS crashed.  I can still get to the hard drive, just not through the app to do an export of JW Library...

Is there any way to copy the profile from one computer to another (including highlights & notes) if you can't access the app to back it up?  I believe the info is stored at:  C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\WatchtowerBibleandTractSo.45909CDBADF3C_5rz59y55nfz3e, but just doing a copy of that tree from old to new does not work (new shows the structure of the old when you launch the app, but when you click on anything the app crashes/closes).   He didn't know about the backup feature before, so all his notes, highlights, etc are only on that one device.  Is there a way to get it from there to the other?

I found this link, which indicates a copy might work (it's old though) if the user name is the same - in my test, the username (%username% above) is different, but I can't see how that would matter?  Here's the link:  https://blog.redaio.com/2016/06/jw-library-easy-backup-and-restore.html

Please help!

I don't know, but it's easy enough in Windows to make a new user account with the same name and folder structure of the previous one and try it. It could have to do with the folder path directories already saved in the appdata. If it works, you can then make a backup and restore to the new primary user.

Windows 7 and 8 had a migration wizard on their setup disk and it allows modifications to save only file and programs you want.

You can also use backup programs, some have free full versions. I like Acronos since it is very fast and really compresses data.

Works for backup to different partition or drive. If you are same computer no problem, if problem use a migration program.
