What staples should always be in our pantry that have a long shelf life?

Recommended Posts

Am trying to get my hands on a cheese making kit as well and learn that skill, but there has been people talking about learning from our grandparents in war time, how they survived and did things, here in NZ they had something called V Gardens, they would put any available soil into gardens and grow things, and neighbours would do this, and they would share what they grow with each other and barter.

These are lost skills these days, what to plant, and when and with what.  Many are looking at basic food, which gives calories, but not nutrients so then people become malnourished, so trying to keep this in mind and how to supplement meals so you can get the vitamins and minerals you need as well.

That'swhere growing a good crop of silver beet or spinach- it's with you forever and the nutrients are there.

What Andi and I are doing is mapping out town for free food - like lakes both nearby and farther out - great sources of fish/blackberry/heritagetrees/bush asparagus banana passionfruit and other goodies- finding creeks for fish/eel and crawlies.

It just means access to nutrients which is what we need  we live close to the sea - if we can get there - we have fish/crab and seaweed.

Jehovah gives us the ability to learn things and I think that that commodity trumps a huge store of food - that can be taken - but learned skills can't be.

We live in an area with access to fresh water fishing - two lakes within walking distance if you don't mind a "good walk" as well as driving distance to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. We also have a small boat.
