Allowed only one word to begin the sentence, I chose poorly, letting my fingers follow feeling instead of rules—an offense both poetic and disqualifying.

Disqualifying oneself just before a major event usually indicates something very extenuating.

Extenuating circumstances, such as emotional whiplash from rogue parrots and theological name-dropping, should surely count for something when judging my earlier lapse in lexical precision.

Troop of thoughts marched through my mind in no particular order, some saluting the rules, others deserting entirely, which explains how grief snuck past the gate.

Successful navigation of a corn maze at dusk, without a map, flashlight, or sense of direction, relies less on strategy and more on stubborn optimism — the kind that convinces you every rustling sound is wind, not raccoons.

Definitions sometimes get lost in translation when a non-sequitur sentence is tossed into the mix that does not follow the "last word" convention of this game or when two people post at the same time leaving two usable options.

Options narrowed quickly in the corn maze—left into shadow, right into spiderwebs, or straight ahead toward the mysterious mooing that no one else seemed to hear.

Announcement over the loudspeaker said the maze would close in fifteen minutes, which was oddly timed considering I’d just befriended a crow and named him my emergency contact.
