'Iso' named Australia's 2020 word of the year

Recommended Posts

The Australian National Dictionary Centre has recognised the dominance of COVID-19 by naming "iso", an abbreviation of "isolation", as the word of the year.

The word was chosen from a shortlist of five expressions, only one of which was unrelated to the virus. That term was "Black Summer", a reference to the catastrophic 2019-20 bushfire season.

Does anyone else use "iso" for when you are in isolation?  Australians always find a way to mangle a word, usually shortening it to be uniquely Aussie.

"We had 'iso baking' — you put on the 'iso kilos' from your 'iso baking' and wind up with an 'iso waistline'.

"We had 'iso bubbles' and 'iso haircuts' and 'iso fashion'.

"It was quite a linguistically productive word." 😄

When I was working, Iso was an abbreviation of isometric and referred to isometric drawings of oil refinery piping.

Say what? Can I have iso with my drink as I contemplate the meaning of this new expression? LOL
