NASA's Webb Discovers Hidden Planet in Famous Star System

Planet found through its atmospheric fingerprint opens new way to uncover worlds hidden in starlight

 

Few planetary systems have shaped astronomers’ understanding of planet formation as profoundly as Beta Pictoris. Since the discovery of its famous debris disk in 1983, observations with ground- and space-based telescopes, including NASA’s Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, have revealed exocomets, intricate dust structure, giant exoplanets, and evidence of a planetary system still under construction. Now, Webb has uncovered a third giant planet using an entirely new approach: identifying it through the chemical fingerprint of its atmosphere.

Galaxy cluster's magnetic field reconstructed for 1st time with

"We believe that the mechanism that 'turns on' these gigantic radio emissions is linked to the formation process of galaxy clusters."

 

For the first time, astronomers have reconstructed the magnetic field of an entire cluster of galaxies, from its central nucleus to its outer limits.

 

The record-breaking achievement is the product of the deepest-ever observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 2255, located around a billion light-years away — and those observations are thanks to the European radio telescope LOFAR (Low Frequency Array).

 

Abell 2255 has long been known for its complexity in radio waves. Its vast, diffuse radio emissions are created by particles called electrons racing at near-light, or relativistic, speeds and interacting with magnetic fields of galaxies in the cluster. Thus, using Abell 2255 as a cosmic laboratory to study the universe in radio waves could lead scientists to a better understanding of how magnetic fields come about and evolve. These observations could also help paint a picture of the dynamics of hot gas in galaxy clusters. This could reveal how the largest structures in the universe are constructed.

NASA's Hubble Shows Star Formation in Andromeda Galaxy Winding Down

Most of the decline is within a prominent star-forming ring 32,000 light-years from the galaxy’s center.

 

The Andromeda galaxy is one of our Milky Way’s closest neighbors. Its proximity gives astronomers an opportunity to investigate it in great detail. NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has conducted two gigantic surveys that combined to image about two-thirds of the galaxy’s disk. Using that data, a team of researchers has measured 200 million individual stars to tease out the history of star formation in Andromeda. They found that star formation has decreased dramatically over the past 500 million years. And they asked: Is Andromeda in the late stages of a longer decline, or is it “running out of gas”?

 

“This project is the combination of multiple decades worth of experience to really get a holistic picture of the Andromeda galaxy,” said lead author Tobin Wainer of the University of Washington.

Researchers combined two Hubble surveys that together imaged about two-thirds of the disk of Andromeda. They found that star formation has been steadily declining.

NASA Webb Explores Family Tree of Newly Discovered Distant Objects

What do little red dots become as the universe ages?

 

It’s been a question since they were discovered in the high-redshift universe by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in 2022. With each additional observation and analysis, astronomers have gradually learned more about the nature of these mysterious red sources.

 

A team of scientists is now providing one branch of the little red dot family tree by sifting through multi-mission telescope data to carefully examine a spiral galaxy at lower redshift. The face-on galaxy, dubbed the “Saguaro” for its prominent arms, is reminiscent of the desert plant in another way: Like the ruby red fruit of the Saguaro cactus, this galaxy has a little red dot in its center, making it a scene ripe for study.
