Conscription is to be introduced for all male citizens of Latvia aged 18 to 27, the country's Ministry of Defense announced Monday.

Over the next five years, all male citizens in this age range "will have to choose one of the four types of military service: State Defense Service, National Guard, Section Commander University Course or alternative services at Ministry of Interior, Health or Welfare," the ministry said in a press release. https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/russia-ukraine-war-news-07-11-22/index.html

This potentially complicates situation of our brothers in Latvia, but the news of alternative service is somewhat positive or hopeful

In the last decades the trend has been to cancel compulsory military service. Yet things can change quickly, and more so in a context of war, where people are carried out by war hysteria.

Not long ago the French government announced a kind of compulsory military service too, but in the end it seems it came to nothing.

Latvia is part of the EU which will push for alternative service. But it's still an extra imposition on the brothers.

Latvia is just across the border from Russia, the last buffer between Europe and Russia. Latvia (together with its neighbors Lithuania and Estonia) where part of the URSS and the Communist government committed a genocide against their population: More than two million people were sent to Siberia and were replaced with Russians. It's no surprise that today people in those lands look at Russia with distrust. On the other hand, Russia still sees those countries are part of its legitimate territory and constantly threatens to invade them. So it's understandable why they would restore a military service and strengthen the army. That often happens in situations where there is a threat of war.

But as you say, if this military service is eventually enforced the EU will force them to provide an alternative service that would be acceptable for most Christians.
