 It turns out you can't get a higher thread count than 800. Because above that the manufacturers use multi ply thread so they can get higher thread counts, but it doesn't change the softness of the sheets. It is for marketing.

Also a 400 count Egyptian cotton is softer than an 800 or 1000 of any other fabric.

Also, the style of weave is a factor in the softness, a percale weave is more breathable, where as a sateen weave is softer, smoother.
