Selling stuff on ebay

Recommended Posts

Hi Ron,

I haven't sold anything on eBay, but have bought numerous things--mostly small things like shoes, clothes, etc., and haven't had any bad experiences at all. I always check the 'seller information' on the right side of the page to see how high the percentage is for positive feedback, a good indication of peoples' satisfaction with a particular seller.

I intend to live forever...so far so good. :D

I tried selling a really old magazine I found at my grandma's house since she didn't want it and I thought a collector might appreciate it. It was the first edition of Ebony for kids, if I remember right. Anyway, someone bid like 5 or 10 dollars and I sent it to them. They later contacted me and said they wanted their money back since the cover was missing. I felt bad, I didn't know it ever had a cover. I thought the first page was the cover, like Reader's Digest didn't used to really have a cover, they just listed the stories inside. Anyway, I refunded their money, but it ended up costing me in the end. So if you are going to sell something be sure you know what you are selling and describe it accurately.

The very first thing I bought of eBay ended up being a fake Microsoft Office software suit. Seller described as new but from damaged box. I got a dubious CD that did not even try to look real. I could not put that into my computer.

I contacted eBay services and showed them photos, seller was shut down within 24 hours, I claimed all but $20 of my money back from eBay secure fund but the best bit was the seller was prosecuted by Microsoft for using a real pic of their branded product and selling fakes. Turns out they view that as a big crime.

I have since sold a few household items and bought a new TomTom bracket for small prices but selling can be a racket.

NOTE: one trick competitors can use is they bid on your item and then find reasons to not reply or pay. The similar item they are selling goes off while you wait and are stuck with a sold item that never gets paid for. Re offering the item for sale can be more trouble than the price and work is worth.

Ron,

My husband and I have sold lots of things on Ebay. Nothing ever too large. Large items you may want to go the craigslist option as those people are usually local and they can come and pick up the large items. Large items tend to be more of a hassle on ebay once you get into the whole shipping and what not of it. What type of items are you looking to possibly sell? Are you looking to do it as a one time deal or something regular?

Hi Ron, how about putting your sofas in an auction on a "Collection only" basis. Make sure you put the dimensions of the sofas in the Description so the buyer knows what size van to hire (or borrow). At the end of the auction you would contact the buyer to arrange a convenient day and time for them to collect.

Ron,

I would definitely go the craigslist option.

http://dublin.craigslist.org/

Basically you would list what it is you are selling general location you are in but not exact location until you have peaked their interest a little, dimensions, and general asking price and photos. Also post if they are to come pick up or if you are willin to drop off.

So for example

I have a black leather sofa and love seat I am selling. It is sofa is 6 feet long and 4 feet at its widest point.Love seat is 4 feet long and 2.5 ft at widest point.( Lots of people forget the width part and then when they realize they can't get it through their front door they try to give it back) located 20 miles outside of Dublin must be able to pick up 200 dollars or best offer

Please call or email if interested. Serious inquiries only please

Just a thought but that's what I would do

Angela

We did ebay for 3 years as part of our business. Then British posting fees went up and the items were costing more to post than they were worth,so bids fell away. Then our bank changed it's policy and stopped honouring paypal transactions and as so many bank branches have closed in the town, we haven't found another to replace the account information with, so stopped doing ebay.

When we first started it was far better, with less fees. We found a small badge/button in a charity store tin of old buttons. My husband recognised it as it came with a 1960's Action Man/GI Joe, so he bought it for a few pence and we got £155 on ebay for it, because so many others wanted it to complete the toy they had. At the same store we saw a Beatles LP record with the rare early yellow parlophone label and got that for a few pence and it made £155 on ebay. We bought some very old scalextrix bugatti slot-racing cars and put them on Ebay and got enough money for a Heritage Tour of the East Coast of America, which I had always wanted to do.

On the downside - sold a old vynil record and got a complaint, so refunded the money and was sent it back, but when we opened the LP sleeve the rotter had replaced the good record with their old scratched version of the same thing. We have had a few claiming that they never received the goods and we always send packets by recorded or 'signed for' post, so they didn't get away with it. We were sent something we bought in America for only £24 , but customs held it as there is hefty duty on goods over £18 from America, which we were not aware of, and had to pay too much to get it released 4 weeks later. Bid on some items only to discover we were being outbid by the seller's family and friends, who had no intention of buying, just bidding the price up - if we didn't reach it, it was put up for sale again with the same set of bidders going again, traced back to them, so we complained. Had damaged items returned - paypal refunded them - they'd let their kids play with the toys until they broke them and then returned them! We got fed up with some who threatened to give bad feedback if they didn't get a good discount. Such is the world we live in!!
