The loud belch echoed through the ship’s speakers, leaving George momentarily speechless, until he leaned toward Communications Officer N. Chillada and whispered, “Let’s hope in their culture that’s not a sign of war—but just in case, prepare the dessert tray; maybe a slice of peace pie will keep things on track!”

George felt a bead of sweat form on his brow as he observed the clippitybopper captain’s deliberate rhythm, the icy stare sending a shiver down his spine while the slight grin hinted at either amusement or impending mischief, prompting George to cautiously say, “Captain, your rhythm is captivating—does it signal approval, or should we prepare for something… spicier?”

Before the clippitybopper captain could answer a loud squelch came from the comm system overriding the clippitybopper signal followed by a momentary silence and a synthesized, multiphased voice announced, "Lower your shields and surrender your ships as we will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own and your culture will adapt to service us ... resistance is futile"

George’s heart sank as the chilling words echoed through the bridge, and with a heavy sigh, he turned to his crew and said, “Stand down and lower the shields—we’re no match for this kind of power, but maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to preserve who we are, even in surrender; after all, tacos may not stop them, but unity might.”

The cord had cloth insulation that was raged and frayed with some of the wires showing through and a Bakelite plug that looked to be barely hanging on, but the toaster was still highly shined as though it was brand new.

"My grandmother took in boarders because her husband was a drunk and used to toast a loaf of bread each morning (with her old toaster with both sides that opened out) until she got this replacement which failed early on and she went back to her old one, but kept wishing this one would work.

Indubitably, she managed to get some bread out that looked suntanned, and given that her paying guests were on half board, offered the food with coffee.

The grandmother made tea, as well, if requested in the morning. Now, she was disappointed  at the relatively new toaster. When her granddaughter arrived, she spoke of a new fix=it shop and offered to take the toaster in for repair of the cord/plug. Ah-ha, grandmother had heard about the fix it shop. One of the boarders bought broken fans at a flea market and after trips to this shop, could resell working fans at the same flea market, at a reasonable profit. The fix it shop owner was named Art and sometimes he though small appliance repair took a bit of art.

Art said, " just saw,  The Wonders of Creation Reveal God’s Glory at someone's home. It was very good and suggests that

By looking at the natural world, we can learn more about its Creator and draw closer to him as our Friend, but I'm not sure what's at the theater."

Ed came to a sudden realization, he was not at the home where he boarded, somehow he was mysteriously transported here to the fix-it shop as he still held his hot cup of Earl Grey tea in his hand; he blinked his eyes quickly, thinking he was seeing things, but the horrid smells of the fix shop filled his nostrils, causing the hairs with them to curl.

The bottle, containing a golden liquid, was standing on the table, near to the stables, and there were two glasses nearby, as if someone was saying 'here, have a drink'.

Ed thought it was helpful to observe the glasses, otherwise, trackies (race track persons )might think it was a specimen for the track doc. Diagnoses and meds were frequently done early every day,  before the actual races. Being backside, early in the day gave many indications which might effect later outcomes. which is one reason the shed rows were not open to the public.

At this point the equine vet appeared from one of the stables, and he was holding a tube of something putrid, waving it in front of his chest and calling out with a loud voice' who did this!, who did this!'.

The toaster wasn’t just sparking wires and cracked Bakelite — it was humming, low and steady, like a beehive stuffed in a breadbox, and every time Art brushed a finger across the frayed cord, the air around it seemed to bend like heat over asphalt; Ed felt it first, standing there with his Earl Grey sloshing dangerously close to the rim, because suddenly he was watching two shops at once — the fix-it counter in front of him and, flickering over the top of it, the dusty shed rows of the racetrack, thoroughbreds stamping and steaming in the cold dawn — and that’s when the awful thought hit him: this shiny relic from Grandma’s kitchen wasn’t broken at all, it was a switch, and somebody, somehow, had left it stuck halfway between time periods, as if the next slice of bread would pop up wearing a century it didn’t belong to.
