Those in their 70s, need to boost their brain health

Recommended Posts

Older people who can solve these 4 problems have a more youthful mental age

Psychotherapist Ioana Rotaru, the director of Ioana Rotaru Therapy, who shared 4 simple problems that if you can master during the later stages of life (around 70+) indicate your mental age is in good health.

1. The delayed recall test

The delayed recall test assesses a person's ability to remember information after a period of time has passed. Rotaru recommends reading a list of between 10 to 15 unrelated words, or having someone read them to you. Then, set about doing another task for 10 to 15 minutes — whether it's loading the dishwasher or hanging your washing out — before trying to recall the words.

Rotaru explains: 'As we age, we tend to start forgetting names or details about things we have done. In psychology, we call this episodic memory. Being able to do this shows good episodic memory and attention, which have been linked with lower risk for dementia and healthier ageing.'

Scientists have discovered that daydreaming is an important tool 🎨for creativity. It causes a rush 🌊 of activity in a circuit, which connects different parts of the brain and allows the mind to make new associations.

Once you pass 70 and find you can't remember many things on the list, what does it mean if, when you were still in your 20's, you never could remember things on a list?

Below is your semi - official list of “Cerebral Gymnastics.”
Warning: Side effects may include sudden insight, improved focus, random philosophical thoughts in the shower, and an irresistible urge to say, “Actually…” during conversations.

  • Read books — and not just the covers, the back blurbs, or the inspirational quotes at the start. Yes, actual pages with words. (Your brain will be shocked but grateful.)

  • Play board games — start light, then move toward games so heavy they could replace your gym weights. (If you find yourself explaining rules for longer than you play — congrats, your brain is growing!) 🎲

  • Reduce mentally passive activities — like watching TV for “just one more episode” until Netflix politely asks if you’re still alive.

  • Get a hobby that involves thinking — photography (focus!), music (brain + rhythm), poetry, storytelling, or writing short fiction about heroic spoons who save the kitchen. Whatever keeps your neurons salsa dancing. 💃

  • Move your body — exercise literally scrubs your brain clean. (Picture tiny janitors in your head, sweeping away brain fog.) 🧹🏃‍♀️

  • Eat smart — brain fuel = good. Junk food = mental molasses. If it glows in the dark or crunches like plastic, maybe… don’t. 🍎:lol1:

  • Sleep deeply (7–9 hours) — because your brain files its paperwork at night. No sleep = messy desk = “where did I put my sanity again?” 😴

  • Digital detox — give your phone a nap. The internet will survive without you for an hour. (Probably.... maybe hmmm .. I have to think about it ... :lol1:) 📵

  • Prayer — yes, seriously. Holy spirit = the best brain Wi-Fi upgrade. Signal strength: divine. 🙏📡

  • Conversations — deep talks about life, ideas, and why cats stare into the void at 3 a.m. sharpen your reasoning.

  • This forum = brain gym (minus the sweaty equipment).

  • Avoid multitasking — your brain is a Ferrari, not a clown car. Focus on one thing at a time, and do it gloriously. 🏎️💨

Principle: The brain grows through challenge and novelty.

Man was created as an intelligent creature with the desire to explore and understand :)
