Those in their 70s, need to boost their brain health

Recommended Posts

Older people who can solve these 4 problems have a more youthful mental age

Psychotherapist Ioana Rotaru, the director of Ioana Rotaru Therapy, who shared 4 simple problems that if you can master during the later stages of life (around 70+) indicate your mental age is in good health.

1. The delayed recall test

The delayed recall test assesses a person's ability to remember information after a period of time has passed. Rotaru recommends reading a list of between 10 to 15 unrelated words, or having someone read them to you. Then, set about doing another task for 10 to 15 minutes — whether it's loading the dishwasher or hanging your washing out — before trying to recall the words.

Rotaru explains: 'As we age, we tend to start forgetting names or details about things we have done. In psychology, we call this episodic memory. Being able to do this shows good episodic memory and attention, which have been linked with lower risk for dementia and healthier ageing.'

Scientists have discovered that daydreaming is an important tool 🎨for creativity. It causes a rush 🌊 of activity in a circuit, which connects different parts of the brain and allows the mind to make new associations.

I have done and observed delayed recall in nursing field many times over the years as a retired nurse. What was funny was the MD said he had to use the same 5 words with each patient because he kept forgetting them.

Once you pass 70 and find you can't remember many things on the list, what does it mean if, when you were still in your 20's, you never could remember things on a list?
