I'm a little confused by the title of the article.

It says Mormons are not on the list, but I see them on the list as "CJ".

I do see JW on the list.

Maybe it was a typo.

@Tortuga

Are Pastafarians (whom I  never met) related to a Rastafarians (I have met at the door?).

[Or is Richard playing with words again...  Alfredo...? hmmm]

The LDS are upset because the list doesn't designate them as Christian. As in "Christian - LDS"

The Pastafarians are a satirical religion that makes fun of God and religion. I probably shouldn't have mentioned them...😖

Yes. I now see my mistake. It was not labelled under "Christian".

Ai helped me out. (I didn't know we have Pastafarians DownUnder.):

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster began in 2005, when Bobby Henderson, a recent physics graduate of Oregon State University, sent a letter to the Kansas Board of Education, which was debating the inclusion of intelligent design theories in high school classes on evolution

Flying Spaghetti Monster, the deity of what began as a parody religion and grew to become a social movement. The adherents, who call themselves Pastafarians, purportedly number in the tens of thousands and are primarily located in North America, western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), which is said to be invisible, is depicted as a floating mass of spaghetti noodles with a large meatball on either side of its body and two centrally located eyestalks.

now approved by US govt

It has nothing to do with approval or not by the government.

"An official memorandum from the Defense Dept. states that the action will streamline the department's collection of religious preferences selection for service members to "enhance targeted religious support from the Chaplaincy."

If you are a DOD servicemember they register your religious affiliation among other things. They trimmed the very long list to choose from, thats all.

Also, in terms of the founding fathers, it is interesting that Unitarians (now Unitarian Universalists) have been removed from the list ...

seems that JW are now approved by US govt as a religion

“This decrease in religious affiliation codes is not designed to make any claims on the legitimacy of any faith or religious belief, nor is it intended to provide a list of ‘officially approved’ religions,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement. “Rather, it is designed to allow chaplains to quickly look at the religious composition of their units and determine how they structure resources to best provide for warfighters of all faith groups.”

That's it....

That's a new age thing, are you confusing with the socinian/biblical unitarians (Jesus without prehuman existence) ?

No, I don't believe so.

I remember looking previously into the history and background of this with some interest from a non-trinitarian perspective....

Firstly"Unitarian Universalists" where formed in 1961 with the merging of the "American Unitarian Association" and the "Universalist Church of America"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitarian_Universalism

The "American Unitarian Association" was itself established in 1825

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Unitarian_Association

Secondly - for example - the family of John Adams, founding father, and second President of the US, is closely associated with the United First Parish Church, Quincy, a Unitarian Church. His family helped pay for the current church, and both he and his wife are buried in the crypt. The website of the United First Parish Church says it is: "A member of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_First_Parish_Church

https://ufpc.org/

So, not saying the religious designation codes are perfect, or even ideal, but which code would John Adams choose if he had been alive last year?? 🤷‍♂️

  • OR — Other Religions

That's what it says near the end of the list. So, does that mean if you're not in the list of 31, then you can fit yourself into the OR category?

I think that Other Religions might include the Church of the Holy Hubcap. They believe that when you die, your soul rolls off into the grass and is never found.

Or perhaps, the Church of the Holy Frisbee. They believe that when you die, your soul lands on the roof and you can't get it down.

I don't believe those last two are in Wikipedia.
