Antipsychotic drugs

Recommended Posts

Is anyone trying to get off these things or watching a loved one trying to get off them, or helping a loved one get off them.

My son is so damaged, and he really loves Jehovah and his word

He's 33 and I think by now he would have been a missionary, he loves languages ☹️

Antipsychotics like what? Are they prescribed medications?

I wish you the best. Is it his desire to stop using these? I have found it hard enough to change myself when I WANT to change. It is almost impossible to change someone who does NOT want to change. Wanting to and keeping that desire to change is the primary concern.

These are usually prescribed for serious mental health issues like schizophrenia and bipolar. A lot of people with those conditions think they can go off of them when they are on them and feeling good. It’s not recommending thought because the serious symptoms they had to begin with inevitably return.

Jer 29:11-“For I well know the thoughts I am thinking toward you, declares Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”

Psalm 56:3-“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Romans 8:38-”For I am convinced...”

Julie, I am very sorry to hear about your son's struggles. It is clear how much you love him and how deeply concerned you are for him.

This may be one of those situations where it would be helpful to speak with your local elders (this alerts them to your practical needs & spiritual needs) and also seek out brothers or sisters who have medical or pharmaceutical training and are familiar with the circumstances. At this point, we do not really know enough about your son's condition, diagnosis, medications, or treatment plan to offer meaningful guidance.

We can certainly pray for him and for your family. As Philippians 4:6, 7 reminds us, Jehovah hears our anxious concerns and can give us peace and strength while we seek the help that is needed.

I hope you are able to find the assistance and support your son needs.

“Healthy people do not need a physician, but those who are ill do.”
— Matthew 9:12

You didn’t mention your son’s diagnosis, which makes it impossible for anyone here to give relatable advice, but I strongly encourage you to watch this video and see how a sister with mental health issues was able to apply the above verse in her life:

 https://www.jw.org/en/library/videos/#en/mediaitems/VODIntExpEndurance/pub-mwbv_202309_1_VIDEO

Here’s a sample from the transcript:

Quote

Exercising, changing my diet, the publications, journaling—that was my lifeline. That really actually helped me for a long time. But it came to a point where it stopped working as effectively.

So I decided: “You know what? I’m going to ask for a shepherding call with my brothers,” because I’d never talked about my depression with the elders at all. This was my first time speaking with them.

And there was one brother, one of the elders, who also battled depression. And he suggested, “Have you thought about seeking medical help?”

Seeking professional help was something I never wanted to do. I thought that I didn’t need to do it, but sometimes there comes a point where you need additional help and what you’re doing is not enough.

In this world, they make you feel that it’s a bad thing, that depression is a dirty word, or that seeking medical help is something that you don’t do. But I realized also that seeking medical help was part of my being able to worship Jehovah effectively.
