What exactly does JW Launcher do?

Why would we want this on our phone?

Welcome, Naveen!

I have a few questions about your JW Launcher. Perhaps you could provide some additional information for those of us who aren't familiar with Android launchers.

  1. What exactly does JW Launcher do? What makes it different from the standard Android home screen?

  2. What practical benefits does it offer our brothers and sisters? Are there features specifically designed for personal study, meetings, or the ministry?

  3. Does it replace the phone's existing home screen, or is it simply an application we open when needed?

  4. Does it integrate with JW Library or jw.org? If so, how? Does it simply provide shortcuts, or does it offer additional functionality?

  5. What permissions does the application require? Does it collect personal information, track usage, or require access to other applications?

  6. What happens after the 14-day testing period? Can testers simply uninstall it and return their phones to their original configuration?

  7. Is this exclusively an Android application? Are there plans for an iPhone version or something comparable for Mac computers?

  8. Is this an independent personal project? I assume it isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the organization, but perhaps that should be clarified.

One additional question: What specifically would you like testers to evaluate? Are you looking for technical problems, suggestions for additional features, or feedback about its usefulness?

I think having these details would help interested ones make an informed decision about participating.

Thank you for sharing your project with us!

Thank you brothers for shows interest.
Here is the answers for all Questions.

1. What does JW Launcher do, and how is it different from a standard Android home screen?
JW Launcher is an alternative Android home screen with a lavender landscape design, customizable shortcuts, an app drawer, and swipeable pages. It also includes a Daily Text card, family worship prompts, meeting countdowns, and assignment reminders. Like other launchers, it can become the phone’s Home screen if the user chooses it as the default.

2. What practical benefits might it offer?
JW Launcher includes built-in features designed to make useful spiritual and family activities easier to access. The Family Worship widget displays a new idea each week to help families plan an enjoyable and meaningful worship evening together. The Online Library search is right on the home screen, so you can quickly search WOL without first opening a browser and finding the site. There is also a Daily Text widget, meeting and convention countdowns, and a personal assignment reminder. Bible, meeting, and ministry shortcuts provide quick access to related material on JW.ORG.

3. Does it replace the existing home screen?
Yes. Once you select JW Launcher as your default Home app, it replaces the existing launcher whenever you press the Home button. Your original launcher stays installed, and JW Launcher remains the default until you change it back in Android’s Settings → Apps → Default apps → Home app.

4. Does it integrate with JW Library or jw.org?
It links to JW.ORG and WOL pages, and the Online Library search opens WOL search results. The Library shortcut looks for an installed app with “library” in its name and opens it if found—for example, JW Library. It does not access or sync JW Library’s private data.

5. What permissions and data access does it use?
The app needs internet access for WOL’s Daily Text and web pages. It queries Android for the names and icons of apps that can appear in its app drawer; it does not request broad QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES access. It also includes permission to request an app uninstall from the drawer, which Android handles with a system confirmation.

Notification access is optional. If enabled by the user in Android settings, the launcher can display notifications in its own panel. The app’s privacy policy says preferences and cached Daily Text are stored locally, and that the app has no account system, ads, analytics, or app-operated tracking. JW.ORG and WOL may receive standard connection information when their pages are used, under their own privacy practices.

6. What happens after the 14-day testing period?
There is no 14-day timer in the app, and it does not stop working when the test period ends. The 14-day rule is a Google Play requirement for some newer personal developer accounts: at least 12 testers must remain opted in to a closed test continuously for 14 days before the developer can apply for production access. Google Play’s testing requirements

Testers can uninstall JW Launcher if they choose. If it was selected as the default Home app, they may need to select their previous launcher again under Android’s Settings → Apps → Default apps → Home app. Uninstalling removes JW Launcher’s own saved settings, but does not uninstall other apps or erase their data.

7. Is it available for iPhone or Mac?
This is an Android app. There is no iPhone or Mac version planned at this time.

8. Is it affiliated with or endorsed by the organization?
No. JW Launcher is an independent personal project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Jehovah’s Witnesses, JW.ORG, or Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society.

What feedback would help?

Please try the app in normal daily use and report:

  • Crashes, errors, slowdowns, or problems setting or changing the default Home app.
  • Whether shortcuts, app search, swipes, and reminders work as expected.
  • Whether the screen is easy to read and use on your device, including in portrait or landscape.
  • Anything confusing, inconvenient, or unexpectedly demanding of battery or data.
  • Suggestions for improvements and whether the features are useful to you.

When reporting a problem, please include your phone model, Android version, what you were doing, and the steps needed to reproduce it. Screenshots are helpful when relevant.
