Bali is very popular with Aussies and with West Aussies in particular as it is only 3hrs from Perth and very cheap. Many go to Bali for weekend getaways and longer holidays.

West Australians planning to travel to Bali for school holidays could have their plans thrown into chaos with the Indonesian government preparing to evacuate parts of the island as a long-dormant volcano threatens to explode.

Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency yesterday warned tourists and locals to stay 7km away from the volcano, with experts warning it could erupt at any time.

The warning is the second upgrade in a week. The Mount Agung volcano is about 70kms from Kuta and close to the resort town of Ubud.

Mount Agung last erupted in 1963 killing almost 2000 people.

The head of Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center Gede Suantika said volcanic tremors had first been detected in August and had since been getting larger.

Don't give up .. it's just around the corner.

evidently we have our spiritual family there too.

Plenty of brothers there, Sandra.  Australian ex-pats live there and work alongside the Balinese brothers and sisters.  Indonesian is the main language, but obviously they speak Balinese there too.  And the locals know some English as well, since there is a high proportion of English speaking tourists there.

Unfortunately, the volcano's eruption is imminent.  Smart traveller, a government site for notifying travel warning, has issued a warning for Australians to rethink their plans for travelling there.  The airport in Denpasar will definitely be affected and they will be trapped there.  But for the rest of the islanders:

Hundreds of tremors each day are shaking the volcano, and the region's leading vulcanologist has said the probability of an eruption is increasing by the day.

Indonesian authorities raised the alert level for the volcano to the highest level, meaning an eruption could be imminent.
