Sherlock Holmes returns

Recommended Posts

Tonight, episode 1 of the third series of Sherlock. The Empty Hearse will reveal how he escaped death at the end of the Reichenbach Fall episode. It will have to be a good explanation! He died in Watson's arms after jumping off a roof!

Can't wait for this excellent series to resume.

hi dave,

i think the premise for elementary is ok,... the actors etc... and even the plots arent too bad but they seem to have to walk the viewer thru it, to the point where we all realize whats happening long before the end,  either because its too obvious or weve been told.... nothing left to work out for ourselves :(

what does "jumped the shark" mean brother?

kindest regards stu

what does "jumped the shark" mean brother?

This is from the Urban Dictionary: Original meaning was the point when a television series shows it has run out of ideas and must resort to stunts to retain viewer interest. Derived from a scene in the last years of Happy Days when the Fonz waterskied over a shark. Includes actions such as "it was all a dream" episodes, live episodes, lead actors playing guest characters, and putting entire cast into a parody of some pop cultural event.

I completely agree Stuart ... Brett is THE definitive Homes and as faithful to Conan-Doyle's Holmes as possible. However, when the 'modern spin' on the brilliant detective was announced I didn't think it would be a good idea and wouldn't work (a bit like when Star Trek Next Gen was announced following the original Kirk series back in the late 80's) ... but in the case of Star Trek AND Holmes I was very wrong! Sherlock is a truly refreshing and absorbing reworking of the original stories and very well done ... the producers really pulled it off.

I've got the SE3 E1 on my HD and am looking forward to watching it tomorrow!

i love jeremy bretts portayal and it is indeed still the standard for all sherlock things to be judged but bobby cumberbund and the hobbit are indeed brill as a pairing in this most watchable of series... ive also set me sky box to record...

If anyone was born to play Sherlock Holmes, it was Jeremy Brett.  I really felt terrible when he died so young.

I do enjoy 'Sherlock,' but I turned off 'Elementary' about five minutes into it.  Something said about a 'dominatrix' or some such thing didn't inspire a lot of confidence!

Live long and prosper. 🖖🏻

I really enjoyed the season 3 opener - excellent. I like how they explained how he "died" but didn't. Nicely done!!

Plan ahead as if Armageddon will not come in your lifetime, but lead your life as if it will come tomorrow (w 2004 Dec. 1 page 29)

Soon .....

I have to say that I was disappointed when Sherlock died and came back.  Kind of a "jump the shark" moment to me, but I forgave it.  Then episode two of this season came out and I really started thinking that it had gotten just silly, and it started to lose me.  Episode three was awesome, they were painting the Mona Lisa, and then at the end they drew Lisa from the Simpsons on it and ruined it for me.

This sums up my feeling on episode three:

I liked 'Benny Cummerbund' as Sherlock in the earlier episodes but the 'wedding+ not dead after all' wasn't a good episode, not on what Sherlock is famed for - deductive reasoning. Then I realised why - the writer writes for Dr Who, so that's why we had more of the stunts and silliness, etc. Keep them to Dr Who and go back to the true intelligent enigma that's Sherlock.
