Personnally I would save $500 by upgrading your hard drive to 1Tb for $80 or so. Get a case for old hard drive and use it as an external drive. Then just upgrade your operating system to 32 bit ( x86 ) win 10 or 8.x or 7 - which one is cheapest. If you have valid 8.x or 7 licence then win 10 is free.

Will give you other options when get back from cat "Cookie time"

Thank you Peter for your assistance. I didn't know you could upgrade you hard drive, but I would like a new laptop. I will check out the specs the one for $389.00 very good price.

Greg, no I didn't type all that info......lol

I guess the question is what do you use your laptop for? Do you have other computers or tablets? Because you have a couple options. Because of the low price range you are looking for I suggest looking into something like a Chromebook. Great for web browsing, Netflix, social networking. There are some caveats with that one. Then there is looking at refurbished or used laptops. Finally, it is worth considering if you need a laptop or if perhaps a tablet or desktop could get the job done. You can build a great low cost desktop for that price point. But it depends if you just want to watch the latest broadcast on JW.org or if you are planning on producing your own videos.

Brother Steven, right now I use my laptop for surfing the web, I watch the JW broadcast, sometimes I will watch DVD's, and I have my iTunes library on my laptop, I have a 32GB iPad as well. As I stated, I have a Vista OS, it's old, and Microsoft will stop the win updates in 2017.

I just want a new laptop so that I'm at least update with the new technology, that is out there now. I was looking at the Surface Pro for $499.00 - I think it more like a tablet, I already have a table. I came to the forums just to get some suggestions.

Why fix what isn't broken?

The system requirements for Vista and Windows 10 are largely identical, so it's unlikely you'll see any compatibility programs by upgrading to Windows 10. And unless you do heavy-duty graphics rendering, it's unlikely that in daily use you'll see much of a speed increase compared to a good hard drive cleaning.

For light duty like that the Surface Pro is not a bad choice. It is very much like a tablet but does run a more robust OS and it is compatible with iTunes and your iPad. And with the available keyboard it is still very much like a laptop. A negative point is that it does not have a built in DVD drive. If you like iTunes I would not go with a Chromebook, they are not compatible.

I've been using Windows 10 awhile now and have to say, I like it. Better than any Windows version in awhile. I still prefer OS X.

No, its not broken....

I can't download the JW library on my computer b/c my os system is old or anything else I might want to download from the window , I need win 8.1 ,  .I can't  even take a screen shot   . So, I reasoned, that it time to get a new computer  :) . I can't upgrade to win 10, right?

I got my wife the ASUS Flip 15.6-Inch 2-in-1 from Amazon and she is quite happy with it.

Yes if it isn't broke don't fix it.

Your computer is adequate for your needs. If you wish a bigger hard drive, that is an easy fix. Operating systems, win 7 or 8.x should be fairly inexpensive. Cheaper than new computer.

Back up all important data, or leave on drive and replace drive with larger one. Use old drive in external case as backup.

If you buy an OS, get the disk with legal code, that way you can install cleanly, and will let you go to win 10 for free.

I recommend a 32 bit ( x86 ) OS for your computer, They work with up to 3 Gb RAM ( RAM prices are expensive right now )

If you are adventurous you can clean install win 10 preview build 10130 32 bit. Download the ISO file and burn image onto dvd ( if you know how )

here is link for both 32 and 64 bit versions http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-10-build-10130-iso-32-64-bit-free-download/

You can see screen shots of win 10 http://jwtalk.net/forums/topic/20480-windows-10/

P.S. if you wish to download vids from JW Broadcast then use Google's Chrome browser with Flash Video Downloader propfessional ( free ) extension.

To add to above. If you are adventurous, update BIOS of you computer to latest, it is not hard but not for faint of heart. Updated BIOS allows more RAM and Bigger Hard Drives. With updated BIOS on this computer, I could add more than 4 Gb ram, which I have done so ( 6 Gb ) and I am running win 10 build 10130 64 bit at the moment.

Thank you Brother Peter for all the good information....so much to take in. I was looking into the win 10 preview build 10130 32 bit. I kinda scared   of doing this install, so right now I'm doing a lot reading and re-reading  about the install I don't want to make any mistakes, and I have to back up my computer first    .

In any in event, I thank you, and all of the other brothers who contributed to my topic.
