OPTIMISM VERSUS REALITY

In September 2000, member states of the United Nations unanimously set a number of goals to be met by 2015. These included the following:

▪ Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day as well as those who suffer from hunger.

▪ Ensure that all children complete primary schooling.

▪ Eliminate gender inequality at all levels of education.

▪ Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five years of age.

▪ Reduce the maternal mortality rate by 75 percent.

▪ Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS as well as the incidence of other major diseases, such as malaria.

▪ Reduce by 50 percent the proportion of people who do not have access to safe drinking water.

Can these goals be reached? After reevaluating matters in 2004, a panel of health officials from around the world concluded that optimism has to be tempered with the realization that hoped-for gains do not reflect what is really happening. The foreword to the book State of the World 2005 reports: “Poverty continues to undermine progress in many areas. Diseases such as HIV/AIDS are on the rise, creating public health time bombs in numerous countries. In the last five years, some 20 million children have died of preventable waterborne diseases, and hundreds of millions of people continue to live with the daily misery and squalor associated with the lack of clean drinking water and adequate sanitation.”

I just pulled this from the UN web site. It's like we use to say at work, if you can't hit the target, move the target.

2015 is the Time for Global Action

2015 presents a historic and unprecedented opportunity to bring the countries and citizens of the world together to decide and embark on new paths to improve the lives of people everywhere. These decisions will determine the global course of action to end poverty, promote prosperity and well-being for all, protect the environment and address climate change.

In 2015, countries have the opportunity to adopt a new sustainable development agenda and reach a global agreement on climate change. The actions taken in 2015 are expected to result in new sustainable development goals that build on the eight Millennium Development Goals.

The UN is working with governments, civil society and other partners to build on the momentum generated by the MDGs and carry on with an ambitious post-2015 development agenda. Explore this site to find out more about the efforts of the UN and its partners to build a better world.

Richard,

Thanks for the heads up and information. This year ( 2015 ) marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the

United Nations. No doubt it will see a review of both it's triumphs and failures and a renewal of it's overall goal to

bring "Peace and Security" to this world. As such we all will be watching closely to see whether their efforts may

mark the beginning of the fortold "peace and security" movement fortold by the Bible.

Agreed. I plan on occasionally monitoring their web site for the next couple of months to see what new goals they decide to strive for. Take a look at my latest Pop Quiz if you have a chance.

Significantly all those goals seem good  but people have to make a change in their attitudes and desires. They like the things the way they are.

Everyone seems to want an end to war but everyone has a different way of doing so and the result is more war.(Their way is BEST.)

Nobody wants to take responsibility for anything  either so things don't change for the better.

Nobody wants the Kingdom either. They will just have to wait long enough to see a change for good.  Too bad most won't find it.
