Thanks for the topic Leslie, I used to work in geriatrics and hated the way they treated the 'patients' there. 

I remember one lady that was in the fetal position and turning her was a painful ordeal. The nuses' aids go in, strip off the sheet and flip her over as she screamed. I was so upset I asked to do rounds on that side by myself. I'd wake her, stroke her arm and ask if I could turn her, slowly. She had very little pain and was so loving and grateful she cried the first time. I long to see and talk to her in the resurrection. I hope she remembers me.

I am sure she will!  Can you imagine NOT remembering the one kind person who treated you gently?  I could not stand to work in a nursing home.  And the sad part is they desperately need people like me/you/us!  The heartbreak they experience first by being put out of their families life's, then the loneliness that engulfs them.  I can not bear to go in one/nursing home.  There are some that I sam sure are good but not many.

Yes, I agree. I didn't last long there. I hope I never live long enough to end up in one.

Leslie,  I was in a nursing home in November and December as a result of falling and breaking my hip. (My dog pulled me down on the sidewalk)

 

 It was like being in prison.  I was so happy when I got to go home.

My mother is in a nursing home.  It's not the worst, but it's not the greatest either.

 

The people who work there are nice and they seem to care, sadly, there is just not enough staff to keep up with the work. They do what they can, but they seriously need help.

I often thought I'd be better off in prison.  I worked a full-time very physical job for the last 30 years, but could never afford health insurance (and still can't).  But if I were in prison or was a single mother, on crack, popping out a kid every 9 months and didn't want to work, I could get free money, free healthcare, food stamps and pretty much anything else I wanted including free legal counsel. But because I worked hard all my life, paid all my bills on time, made sure not to incur any debt and paid my due share of taxes, I get nothing but a pile of bills if I get sick, I leave my family in the poor house and bankruptcy (which I would loathe to do).  

 

Can't wait till Jehovah balances those scales!

I'm told that nursing homes are changing here...

As the people who were on drugs in the sixties start to come in there is a shift in attitude in the homes. Aggression is coming into play, the places are no longer as peaceful as they should be.

Things can only get worse.

I will add, however, that not everyone goes into a nursing home. Last year I met a woman who was born on July 14, 1914. She was six months off 100 at the time and she lived alone in her own home and still drove her car to the shops.

I told a friend, he reckoned his 102-year old aunt did the same!
