NATO held an emergency meeting in Brussels of ambassadors from its 28 member states to respond to what Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called "unacceptable violations of Turkish airspace" after a Russian jet crossed its frontier with Syria on Saturday.

A Russian warplane again violated Turkish airspace on Sunday, a Turkish foreign ministry official said late on Monday, prompting Ankara to summon Moscow's ambassador.

It had done the same following Saturday's violation, and said Russia would be held "responsible for any undesired incident that may occur" if it were repeated.

NATO members "strongly protest" and "condemn" incursions into Turkish and NATO territory, the alliance said after the first incursion was reported.

"Allies also note the extreme danger of such irresponsible behavior. They call on the Russian Federation to cease and desist, and immediately explain these violations," NATO said in a statement after the meeting.

The White House called the Russian move a "provocation," and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said it illustrated concerns about an escalated Syrian conflict.

This sounds like the kind of thing that can cause all sorts of NON "Peace and Security" things.   :nope:

First they fight, then they kiss and make up.

It seems there has to be some turmoil for them to quell in order to proclaim there is peace and security, even if it is a false proclamation..

Sorry to say this, but this is blown totally out of proportion. Little incursions into foreign airspace in order to buzz another air force unit are every day practise. The same day this "breaking news!" was reported, Turkey invaded greek airspace with 4 fighter planes with weapons hot. It's just a way of proving strength and capability and reminding the other guy you have guns, too.

To put it simply, this was Russia's way of telling Turkey to stay away from Syrian airspace. Rumour has it that Russia is beginning to impose an unofficial "no-fly-zone" there and has already "escorted" a few Israeli bombers back out of Syrian airspace, too. (Israel has been carrying out the occasional strikes on the Assad regime for months) They're trying to show they mean business, they want control over what's going on in Syria and don't want anybody meddling in their affairs by dropping supplies on ISIS or "moderate rebels" nor by dropping bombs on Assad's positions.

Whether the West will accept this power grab is up to the politicians there, but in the end, this is the same game being played all over the world all the time, just this time Russia is wanting to call the shots.

Didn't they just say over and over that they had peace already?

No, they keep saying over and over again that they WANT it - not that they HAVE it.

Russia keeps flying into British Airspace with their latest warplanes and having to be escorted out by the RAF. I think Mr Putin likes to show everyone what he is capable of by what hardware he has.

The Brits get very spikey about it though as Russian planes have come very close to our Nuclear Establishments, which are a no fly zone in their air-space Drones and allsorts have been stopped noseying round Sellafield near us - the biggest Plutonium dump in the World and due to build 3 fast-breeder reactors there while the oldest 1950's Nuclear Plant is being decommisioned.
